Well if it's a passport you pay £8.75 for the form to be checked, sent off to ips by next day delivery and receive priority handling which means it is processed on average a week to two weeks earlier.
Next day delivery is normally £6, if your old passport or birth certificate goes missing in the normal post you run the risk of identity theft.
Anyone who doesn't pay the extra couple of pounds for peace of mind and priority service is imo stupid.

cheers. How big a mug must someone be to pay for them to check their passport forms and then they still get returned with an error on them! Top rip off. Mrs Devo owes me £7 (maybe £5 back then - 10 yrs ago).
The problem with check and send is the photographs, the customer has the final say if they want to send it as the post office can only advise. Many a time I've told someone that their application doesn't comply and they need new photos or they need to be countersigned only for the customer to insist on sending them in. They then get the forms back a few weeks later and come in and blame the post office! - the same happens with signatures out of the box and blue ink.
The stupidity of the general public is mind boggling at times.

Quite right Ginge. He should work for nothing. How dare he make an income from his profession. The very nerve!
We get about a pound, it takes up to ten minutes to check a passport application - you do the maths Ginge.
Some people have absolutely no clue about the real world at all.
Thats enough for me to tell you, that you can not say that Olly, wasnt fluff.
I can send you documents with names and address's of mates if you like, you can post stuff there for me.
Oh yeah, thats right, he turned up to darts comps and was seen, do these people that seen him know who fluff is or what he looks like. No, they, like you, dont.
Its also amazing how these 98averages on the net became 3-0 defeats to kids his own age in person. Amazing turn around in form.
OK let me explain to you again, I check documents on behalf of the government to let people have passports, driving licences and payouts of £250k
I think i would spot fakes don't you?
Now we've been here before because someone convinced you he was, you can believe that if you wish fella I really don't care. I am telling you I've seen evidence he is who he claimed to be, if my word is not good enough then I can do or say no more but what I will not do is go through this rubbish again.
As for the online comps, I wasn't there so I cannot comment but let's say he cheated or embellished his scores, does that make him guilty of being fluff? Obviously not.
So you dont know who fluff is, what he looks like, or for that matter where he lives, yet you know it wasnt Olly.
