WDF one step closer to olympic compliance

Post by The Jolly Man »

Yesterday (April 19th 2016) in Lausanne Switzerland, AIMS (Alliance of Independent Members of Recognized Sports) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the IOC that now places them as part of the Olympic movement. What this means, is the WDF being one of the member sports in AIMS, has now become one step closer to Olympic compliance.

I can think of nothing worse than darts in the olympics. Hopefully this never happens.

No chance it'll ever be a medal sport at an Olympics, so does this open up more avenues of funding to develop the sport or just a waste of time.

A sport also has to be actively played by men in 75 countries to be considered.

How many members do the WDF currently have? Less than 75 if you bundle the UK constituent parts into 2 and the other ones like Catalonia into Spain, I would wager.

You're telling me that slalom, beach volleyball, archery and ice hockey are played in more countries than darts?

Not on your nelly

I'm not the one who makes the rules. A sport/game has to prove it is played actively by men in 75 countries and women in 40 for them to even consider inclusion. Having less than 75 countries with membership of the world governing body will not help the case at all, thankfully.

Why are less than 75 countries members of the WDF then? Not going to help their cause. No serious darts fan wants it in the Olympics anyway, utterly ridiculous notion.

68 not too short. I would imagine it wouldn't be too difficult to pull in another 7.
Africa and Asia would be the places to quickly pull in the deficit.

Does the 68 include Wales/Scotland/England/NI and also Spain/Catalonia?

You can deduct 4 straight away so that's 64.

60 - 65 whatever. Not difficult to get in 15 more. They are there playing the game in those continents. Just needs some effort from the WDF to connect with the darts orgs there.

We could even start a thread to get the darts geeks on here to research these countries who are playing darts but are not WDF affiliated.
Give it a month and it would be at 75.
