Changes to 2017 World Grand Prix

Post by Ginge »

No Irish qualifiers anymore!

2017 World Grand Prix
Cut-off date:
September 11 2017
Seeds:
Top 8 in Order of Merit
Qualifying Players:
Top 16 in Order of Merit
Top 16 in ProTour Order of Merit not otherwise qualified
Good move? Bad move? A precursor to the event moving out of Ireland?

Fair move - shoehorning Irish players into the event was never fair. If you are good enough, you are good enough - and Dolan and Gurney are both good enough.

Can only be a good move in the long run.

The best players should be there on merit & not because of where they were born.

I'd go so far as to suggest that in the past the Irish qualifiers for the WGP has made it possible for 1 or 2 Irish players to keep there tour cards. O'Connor & Mansell immediatley spring to mind.

Has to be because it's going to move eventually.

I think so to. Could be good to look for a new country to host it as its become a bit stale and not brilliantly attended as far as I could tell on TV. WIth it being double-in it shoudl be a great event on the calender

Don't like this change at all.

For the record, European qualifiers at the 2017 Worlds:

Jeffrey de Graaf
Max Hopp
Ron Meulenkamp
Dimitri van den Bergh

A combined 90+ average, all 4 lads are young talents, all played well, Max even won his game and Dimitri was also close.

Are we getting 4 more PDPA qualifiers or another overseas players? Why?

Good move to scrap the two irish spots, but can't see any consistent with leaving the four host nation qualifiers in the ET event.

In line with my anti wildcard stance i've long disliked the Irish spots, great move IMO.

i think that a bad move they should keep that so players from Europe cant play full tour still have chance of quaffing for this event thru that table

It are always European players who actually do play the full tour that qualify through that table. So that won't be the difference. I hope they change it into a non-uk table.
