BDO and PDC collaboration
BDO and PDC collaboration
Again, another theoretical scenario, should the BDO implode and/or cease to exist as a body able to provide major tournaments, so hear me out...
There's been a lot of discussion about the level of collaboration between the two organisations and surprisingly, the darting divide has reduced somewhat with BDO involvement in the GSOD (albeit loosely). In my opinion, it is clear - there needs to be a professional body and a clearly defined amateur one. But that doesn't mean that both organisations can't have some say in the running of the game.
The PDC is going from strength to strength in terms of playing standards, popularity, TV viewership globally, media coverage and reputation. Prize money is increasing 10% year-on-year. The new TV deal will cement this in the UK, probably increasing company revenue to beyond £25m per year. As the sport gains more coverage in Europe with perhaps further increases in Asia and the Pacific, the organisation can go to the next level. This has to be organisation's long term goal.
The BDO has substantial depth in terms of playing numbers and a clearly defined amateur structure to bring players from the bedroom or pub, through super leagues to the County Championship and then many opens. Under a new structure, I'd propose that Super League be retained for the bottom layer of the hierarchy, to develop amateur players. A bit like the lower reaches of non league football. Super Leagues would also provide a qualifying event structure for the UK Open.
The best SL players would then be selected for their County sides. The competition would be regionalised into North and South bar the Premier Division, with a maximum of 8 teams in each division - seven county weekends a season, with an 8th weekend being a play off final weekend to decide the County Champion and various promotion and relegation finals. The best County players from each County (more players based on division) would also have a "Gold Cup" at Lakeside, alongside a World Amateur Championship, World Youth Championship and Women's World Championship, as well being given free opportunities to enter Q School, to continue up the hierarchy, but this would be optional. Tour card holders would be ineligible for county matches.

BDO will cease to exist if it gets that far. Everything you say the BDO could offer doesn't need the BDO.
The PDC won't want the name BDO involved even in just name

Granted on the second point. But it would be the a de facto setup wouldn't it?The Jolly Man wrote:BDO will cease to exist if it gets that far. Everything you say the BDO could offer doesn't need the BDO.

Re: BDO and PDC collaboration
Don't think team darts like Super League and County is really necessary at all to provide a structured pathway to the big time. I mean, it's going to continue to exist (Super League certainly, County perhaps not), but I don't see the need to integrate it. Haven't a lot of places started offering local singles leagues anyway?
