Sky/pdc trucks should be outside the winter gardens today.
This is still a great event. Looking forward to it.

On a serious point: I have never seen beer thrown at the matchplay.
though I have seen folk taken out by security when having drank too much beer.
The venue is superb. Great atmosphere.
£26 a ticket. Travel up north Paddy, a very friendly place.

Phil Taylor won the World Championship and PDC World Matchplay a combined 32 times. No one else has won more than 29 major/premier singles titles of any sort (MvG 29, Bristow 24, RvB 21, Gulliver 18).
[special thanks to @knockedoffperch for alerting me to this observation]

I guess it just shows how good Taylor has been at Blackpool.
And it does add weight to the post from Phil Davies on the previous page. Think in terms of who would win a Matchplay with both MVG and Taylor on their best Blackpool form would see a potentially similar scoreline to their quarter final last year.

Re: 2018 PDC World Matchplay- Blackpool- 21st-29th July 2018
MICHAEL VAN GERWEN believes he is the man to beat in Blackpool ahead of the start of his BetVictor World Matchplay campaign.
The world number one has dominated the sport in 2018 so far, claiming victory at The Masters, Premier League and World Cup in addition to six ProTour and six European Tour titles.
Van Gerwen will look to take on Phil Taylor's mantle as the 'king of the Winter Gardens' this summer as he seeks a third World Matchplay crown and the newly-titled Phil Taylor Trophy.
"Of course, Phil did well there in the past but times change," said Van Gerwen, who was defeated 16-6 by Taylor in last year's quarter-finals.
I can't afford to think about the players of the past because I have to deal with the players who are around now.
"You can't stand still and think about the past, you have to move forward and try to win the tournament.
"I've had the pressure of being the best player on my shoulders for a few years now but I can handle it."
Saturday's opening night will mark Van Gerwen's 10th appearance in Blackpool, having come runner-up in 2014 before claiming back-to-back victories in 2015 and 2016.
"The World Matchplay is one of the biggest tournaments of the year," added the Dutchman.
The venue is phenomenal and there is always a great crowd in who get behind me every year.
"I need to do my job again this year and not make any mistakes, but I think the format suits my game.
"To win any trophy is nice but this is a huge tournament and it would be really special to win it for a third time."
The Dutchman will take on compatriot Jeffrey de Zwaan, who is making his Winter Gardens debut, in their first round clash.
"I know it will not be an easy game," said Van Gerwen.
"There are so many good players on the circuit now and you have to make sure you play well and don't make any mistakes.
"I will be huge favourite to win the game even though he beat me in the UK Open.
"Maybe he will be a bit nervous with it being his first time in Blackpool and I'm confident I will get the win."
Watch Michael in action at The BetVictor World Matchplay, which will be broadcast on Sky Sports from July 21-29. For tickets, call the Winter Gardens Box Office on 0844 856 1111 or buy online at pdc.seetickets.com.

Re: 2018 PDC World Matchplay- Blackpool- 21st-29th July 2018
ALAN WARRINER-LITTLE looks ahead to the start of the BetVictor World Matchplay this Saturday and predicts who will lift the Phil Taylor Trophy.
As a two-time finalist you must have fond memories of the World Matchplay, how do you look back on your time playing at the Blackpool event?
When we started the PDC it was one of our big two unique events and I was lucky enough to play in two finals.
The World Matchplay is now in its 25th year and is going stronger than ever which is great to see.
Like all PDC events the quality of play has improved and ticket sales have gone through the roof over the years - all the players want to play there and all the fans want to be there.
All players are there on merit and the big name players are under pressure from the first round.
What makes the Winter Gardens stage such a special place to play darts?
The Winter Gardens is unique - the crowd is so close to the stage and it's generally quite hot up there.
I've always said Blackpool is a working man's Las Vegas - there is always such a party atmosphere with everyone enjoying themselves.
Being from Lancashire I always had a lot of local support so it was always a special tournament for me.
What is your pick of this year's first round ties?
The first round clash I'm most looking forward to is Raymond van Barneveld v Kyle Anderson.
Raymond has had some great moments up there, including his nine-darter in 2010, but he would've liked to have won it.
He's always a big stage player who reacts to the atmosphere of the crowd and the status of the event so he will be at his best.
Kyle is one of those players who can push him all the way and is certainly capable of beating him.
What do you think could potentially be the game of the tournament?
If Michael van Gerwen and Adrian Lewis both win their first round ties then they will meet in round two - that would be really special.
When they played each other in Blackpool in the 2013 semi-final it was one of the best games I have ever seen - nobody wanted it to finish.
It was such an incredible match which Adrian eventually won 17-15 and if they meet again this year it will be unmissable.
Who will be the surprise package in Blackpool this year?
Looking at the draw there are a number of players who are playing well but I'm going to go for Steve West.
I think he is now one of the top players in the world, he always does well on European Tour and floor events so he is due a good run on TV.
He has a tough first round game game against Daryl Gurney but it's certainly a game he can win and he'll come into the game with a lot of confidence.
Steve is a very good scorer, he just needs to get to grips with the pressure he puts on himself and he will do well.
And finally...who will walk away with the Phil Taylor Trophy?
I was torn between two players in deciding who I think will win - Rob Cross or James Wade.
I'm going to go with Cross because I believe he is back to the incredible standard he achieved at the end of last year.
He found it difficult for the first few months of this year after being crowned World Champion with the extra travelling and being the man to beat but since the Premier League finished he has been able to get back to some normality.
Rob is practicing more again, he looks fully focused and could go under the radar like he did at the World Championship.
Of course, it wouldn't be a surprise if Michael van Gerwen won because he is the best player in the world, while Michael Smith is another danger with the good form he is in.

Re: 2018 PDC World Matchplay- Blackpool- 21st-29th July 2018
GARY ANDERSON is targeting a career-best performance at this year's BetVictor World Matchplay.
The Blackpool event hasn't been a happy hunting ground for the two-time World Champion, whose best performances came in 2014 and 2016 when he made the semi-finals on both occasions.
Fresh from his US Darts Masters triumph earlier this month, Anderson will be hoping to go at least one better at the Winter Gardens this time around.
"It's well-documented that it's not one of my favourite tournaments but I'll see how it goes," said Anderson, who has starred at the World Matchplay every year since making his debut in 2009.
I've played some good stuff and then some terrible stuff, so it's going to be interesting to see what happens.
"Nowadays every round in every tournament is hard, but the World Matchplay is a lot of the boys' favourite and they're there to win, so it does make it harder."
Anderson's first assignment is against a rejuvenated Stephen Bunting on Sunday night and the Scotsman knows he will have to be on top form to reach the last 16.
"Stephen is a great player and it is good to see him back to near his best," Anderson added.
"If I turn up and play my game like I did in Vegas, I'll be fine. If I turn up like I did (in Shanghai) we'll see what happens, but I'm looking forward to it though."
Watch Gary in action at The BetVictor World Matchplay, which will be broadcast on Sky Sports from July 21-29. For tickets, call the Winter Gardens Box Office on 0844 856 1111 or buy online at pdc.seetickets.com.

Re: 2018 PDC World Matchplay- Blackpool- 21st-29th July 2018
A NEW era begins at the BetVictor World Matchplay on Saturday, as the likes of Michael van Gerwen, Rob Cross and Peter Wright begin the challenge to succeed the legendary Phil Taylor as the king of the Blackpool event.
The prestigious event, televised live on Sky Sports, will see 32 players competing for £500,000 in prize money, including a first prize of £115,000 for the winner along with the newly-titled Phil Taylor Trophy.
Only two-time winner Van Gerwen and 2007 champion James Wade have previously tasted victory at the historic Winter Gardens from this year's 32-player field - and the world number one is aiming to make it a third Blackpool triumph.
"The World Matchplay is one of the biggest tournaments of the year," said Van Gerwen, who will play fellow countryman Jeffrey de Zwaan on the opening night.
To win any trophy is nice but this is a huge tournament and it would be really special to win it for a third time.
"The venue is phenomenal and there is always a great crowd in who get behind me every year.
"Phil did well there in the past but times change. I think my time is now - I know Phil's records won't be beaten but I want to show that this is my era.
"You can't stand still and think about the past, you have to move forward and try to win the tournament.
"I will be huge favourite to beat Jeffrey even though he beat me in the UK Open, it will not be an easy game but I'm confident I will get the win."
Saturday's high profile opening night will also see Premier League finalist Michael Smith start his Blackpool challenge against in-form Welshman Jonny Clayton.
“I can’t wait to get there now and come out fighting,” said Smith, who claimed his first TV title in Shanghai last weekend.
Blackpool is one of the few events I get to stay at home for so I’ll come into the tournament feeling happy, well rested and enjoying spending time with family.
“In previous years I haven’t been there long enough, but this year I am well up for it and hopefully I can have a good run.”
Former finalist Adrian Lewis will take on James Wilson on night one, while four-time quarter-finalist Dave Chisnall will meet former World Youth Champion Keegan Brown.
The first round continues with a double session on Sunday, with the afternoon's action headlined by World Grand Prix champion Daryl Gurney taking on Steve West.
Premier League star Gerwyn Price faces Joe Cullen, Ian White meets German youngster Max Hopp and Darren Webster takes on emerging Irish star Steve Lennon.
Champions League of Darts and German Darts Masters winner Mensur Suljovic opens the evening session against evergreen Steve Beaton, who is competing in Blackpool for a 19th time.
Gary Anderson, in search of his first World Matchplay title, plays Stephen Bunting before World Champion Cross takes on Mervyn King and Raymond van Barneveld faces Kyle Anderson.
The first round concludes on Monday, with 2007 winner Wade meeting rapid-fire Dutchman Jermaine Wattimena and 2017 finalist Peter Wright, the number two seed, coming up against Jelle Klaasen.
Kim Huybrechts is seeking his first win at the Winter Gardens in seven attempts as he faces John Henderson, while Simon Whitlock takes on Richard North.
Van Gerwen is the red-hot favourite with BetVictor to lift a third World Matchplay title at 4/6, while Anderson is the 8/1 joint second favourite alongside Cross, with Wright in at 10/1.
A limited number of tickets are still available from the Winter Gardens Box Office by calling 0844 856 111 or in person.
The BetVictor World Matchplay will be televised live on Sky Sports and worldwide through the PDC's broadcast partners, as well as through PDCTV-HD for Rest of the World Subscribers (outside of UK, Ireland & Netherlands).
