Reigning Lakeside world champion Glen Durrant produced some astonishing darts to reach the final of the Isle of Man Classic, where he will face Mark McGeeney in a repeat of January’s BDO World Championship Final on Sunday.

Durrant produced some terrific performances on Thursday en route to reaching the final, but none more so than in his last 16 clash against Mark Layton. Layton had whitewashed Paul Hogan- who reached the last 16 of last weekend’s UK Open- to set up a tie against ‘Duzza’, but he was blown away by the Teesside star.

Durrant averaged an astonishing 133.60 to complete a stunning 4-0 victory in just 45 darts. He kicked off proceedings with three consecutive 11-darters, before completing the rout with a 12-darter, to record the second highest darting average on record.

Kyle Anderson holds the record for the highest darting average in competition- having averaged an incredible 134.84 against Terry Jenkins in a Players Championship event back in 2015.

However, Durrant’s exploits usurp Gary Anderson’s 133.35 average in a 6-1 demolition over Arron Monk back in 2011, whilst it also beats Michael Smith’s 132.50 average that he posted on the PDC Youth Tour against Michael van Gerwen, which was achieved over three legs.

Durrant kicked off his Isle of Man classic campaign with a 3-1 win over Steve Byrne in the L128, having received a bye in the opening round. He then eased past Paul Kelly, before whitewashing BDO referee Antony Dundas 4-0 to book his spot in the last 16.

The two-time world champion stormed into the quarter-finals with his record-breaking win over Layton, where he saw off Dutchman Willem Mandigers 4-2. Durrant then faced 2015 Lakeside world champion Scott Mitchell for a place in the final, and he edged out ‘Scotty-Dog’ in a last-leg decider to triumph.

As a result, ‘Duzza’ will now face BDO number one Mark McGeeney in the final- the third time the pair have contested a BDO ranking final in 2018 alone. Durrant survived match darts as he defeated McGeeney in a thrilling deciding-set to retain his Lakeside crown in January, before ‘The Gladiator’ gained revenge at last month’s Dutch Open.

McGeeney dropped just two legs en route to reaching the quarter-finals; brushing aside Rhys Hayden, Reece Colley, Mike George and Daniel Day. He then defeated Lakeside semi-finalist Michael Unterbuchner 4-2 to reach the last four, before edging out Allan Edwards in a last-leg shootout to set up a final showdown against Durrant on Sunday.

This event is the first of a treble-header at the Isle of Man International Darts Festival, and the women’s final will see three-time Lakeside world champion Lisa Ashton play Sharon Prins. Ashton reached the final with a 4-2 win over former Lakeside finalist Fallon Sherrock, whilst Prins defeated the veteran Tricia Wright by the same scoreline.

Would have been nearer 140 with the roomier blade 5 segments. And they are bigger, regardless of the usual deflections and nonsense.
