Do you have any of the big names in the sport? - no

What sane buisnessman or tv channel would honestly look at what the bdo has put out over the last 18 months and see that as sound business, the last decent sponsor they got didn’t bother to send their representative to the event.

There are many many sporting events that get on tv that barely have a crowd. There was a t20 cricket event based in Abu Dhabi over the last weekend played in a virtually empty stadium and was on tv!
On freesports

And that was heavily backed by a big sponsor and had decent named cricketers playing it so it doesn’t really compare

Hang on, you didn't mention specific channels just TV !

Yes it had some excellent cricketers but not the real top t20 stars if you like - one team sent a weakened squad anyway!

So going by your points, it's three no's !

Freesports (and FrontRunner) is the dregs, i.e. nobody else wants it. Getting it on there is no measure of success as its the last resort. Hardly a surprise that cricket event was on there, tbh.

At this point yes but only because we are so close to a unified darts again

If the bdo just gave up on lakeside instead of the embarrassment they are doing now we would be there.

It is. However it is still the dregs. Lakeside ends up on there and it is a disaster, IMO. But the "at least we can watch it" brigade wont care....

It has a multimillionaire backer already in place, it’s a completely different situation to lakeside, Yorkshire didn’t even want to send a team but was forced to because of the money involved.

If the bdo had someone with millions backing them and willing to pay for their tv then yeah I’m wrong, but they don’t. At this point outside of paying for coverage themselves or putting it on YouTube I don’t know what they can

Don’t forget the loss making tournaments of the last 2 years (wdt, masters) were all covered by the money from c4. No money from tv and bdo are going to lose a hell of a lot of money this year

Yes I get the sponsor bit and it's a big factor clearly.

However, if you're just talking about getting an event on tv and your original point didn't mention sponsor(s) then it's clear any sporting event can get on any tv channel!

As noted the comments about cricket on Freesports is a complete red herring. Both the Abu Dhabi invitational and forthcoming Afghanistan T20 league have Asian millionaire backers and massive TV rights fees from India. Those cover all the filming, production, hosting, paying players etc.

Freesports get these for a minimal payment and all they need to do is transmit them and rake in whatever advertising they can get. Cricket fans are more attractive to TV as seen as wealthier than darts fans so higher advertising rates.

BDO are in a similar situation to British Baketball League BBL. Last year they have one free game a week on BBC website and on Freesports, however all production costs were paid for by a sponsor. The pictures were given free to BBC and Freesports. There was no prize money cost to cover This year the sponsor has pulled out so BBL went to BBC and Freesports and said will you pay for filming and they said no. Hence the basketball not on TV. The audience does not justifying paying.

So it comes back to same situation with BDO they have to find a sponsor to pay to film it, then find a TV channel that wants 9 days of coverage afternoon and evening (none do), but you still have nothing to cover prize money as any TV channel won’t pay for coverage. Best would be revenue share at the location and whatever the BDO share that’s the prize fund, so a dramatically reduced pot.

As said these days 9 days is way too long for TV when any TV channel with any sense knows whatever repeat they put on would get a bigger audience than BDO darts.

British netball is shown on Sky but all production costs and filming etc is covered by Vitality as the netball sponsor...Vitality get their name out there and Sky get a cheap sport ....BDO don't have a sponsor like that to call on

It’s all chicken and egg.

BDO needs crowds turning up at the events, and talking in the thousands not hundreds.
That attracts a sponsor who wants to appeal to them and also pay for TV filming to get brand out there.
The resultant filmed product can therefore offered for free to TV channels.

Someone would take some of it, even if only the likes of Freesports for 1 or 2 days.

Remainder could be streamed.

Why does 2 world Championships bother you
I think it creates confusion in the sport and its the last barrier that the game has to sort out with the general public, 25 years on and when we talk about darts and world champions the media has to still go on a tangent and explain there is 2 world championships because of the split ect ect ect.

The problem is the divide is pretty much over bar the 2 world championships, darts could be unified in 12-18 months if the BDO just gave up that one tournament. I know its hard for some people as lakeside and the BDO worlds has the history, but at this point its like the japanese soldiers that were still fighting on years after Japan had surrendered.
