It's never been any different in the BDO, PDC or when it was all just Bdo.

It's interesting to look at why Darts is not yet ' a young man's' game in general but what has it got to do with pdc v bdo? Have i missed some posts?!

Yes keep up

How nice of Garry to include Duzza’s Gold Cup, Isle of Man Open, British Classic, England Open and Jersey Open as majors :)

The PDC v BDO is for various reasons. Spite, sadness, Schadenfreude.
Darts isn't a "young man's game" in the sense that players quickly get too old, but it is a game where young talent can excel.
In the PDC:
4 of the top 16 are 30 or under.
8 of the top 32 are 30 or under.
But _18_ of the top 48 are 30 or under.
In fact, the younger players in the 33 to 48 range are all _28_ or under.
And I'd also note that there's "old" players like van Gerwen who Adrian Lewis who were playing at a top level at a young age, and you also get player like Price who switched later and quickly made it to the top.
Also, Cadby is 23 and I don't doubt he'd have a much higher rank if he'd not lied and overstayed his visa.

Given that players can have a long career, I think the high proportion of young players in the 33-48 ranking range is pretty telling of the trend towards youth.

I haven't looked at the BDO but I'd expect it to be older. The top young talent will start in or quickly switch to PDC so I think we should expect the BDO to be older overall.

I really wish the BDO would talk seriously with Hearn.

EDIT:
BDO is older, having more players in the top 64 who're 56-65. (Can't get find all their dates of birth).
BDO does seem to have a somewhat similar spread of ages, although fewer on the younger end and more older players.

Weirdly, both PDC and BDO seem to have few top 64 players in the 36-40 age range. Maybe it's a darts era thing, or maybe early thirties is when players are most likely to give up their attempts at making it big.

I think the point is you would expect the real youth/younger players to excel more but who seriously could win a major next year other than MvG, Ando and others over 30?? Only Michael Smith I'd say and no one else who is ranked outside the top 16. And in terms of the trend, by the time these 33-48 ranked players you mention get into the top 16/8 or win a major they are over 30!

Don't forget MvG is only 29! He is of course a one-off.

Ref the BDO, don't forget also the Winmau World Master is only 25!

Rob Cross is 28. I think he is _capable_ of winning majors.

MvG isn't really a one-off.
Adrian Lewis won his double at 25 and 26.
Going back further, Bristow won his first titles pretty young.
Exceptional talent will climb quickly.

I wouldn't expect the younger players to really be excelling, due to the longevity in darts, but I think that overall things are getting younger because of earlier development.

No need to mention Cross as was included in the others even though 28 given he’s world champ.

MvG is a one-off - there probably won’t be another player like him given he was winning majors at 17.

Are there any players under 25 who could win a major??

Many people expected Lewis to win much earlier than he did.

So are you saying because there are players who are at the top who are older this means younger players won’t be excelling at a young age?? Surely age isn’t a barrier??

But perhaps what you’re trying to say is as players developer younger these days because of all the tours available, etc then it means perhaps in 10-15 years we could have say 70-80% of the world top 16 all being 25 or younger and some already being major winners??

I mean that the improved youth development means that the players will plateau sooner and, if they have the talent, will be able to reach the top 16 sooner.

But darts allows for a long career, and players have to be better then the existing players to replace them. So, we should still see a spread of ages.

I think that if the top 16 gets substantially younger it'd be a temporary thing caused by an increased talent pool, but then it'd go back to the normal age spread.

Back to BDO (it is a BDO thread after all), I think the age spread in the BDO is to be expected. It's a 2nd tier, with a lower average standard of play, and the spread is a bit wider, with more young players and more aging veterans. Even though it seems like the BDO will be skipped by more young talent, I think that there will always be a surplus of young players and the BDO will continue to have the bigger spread. If anything, with the overall growth of the game, unless the PDC keeps growing the main tour, the BDO will end up benefiting from increased depth.

Just wondering if this event was confirmed for 2019? Looking at the BDO calender it seems to have a new name but there isn’t a single event marked up as part of the qualification
