How about the Squash World Championships ?

The World Championship of Online Poker definitely isn't on any proper TV Coverage but will have a major sponsor but has over a million dollar prize fund
World Series of Poker etc. have a massive buy-in (entry fee) of something like $10k per player. However there are normally many opportunities to win free entry as the online poker sites buy multiple entries to reward their players same with real casinos.

So the prize fund is mostly covered by these entry fees but in the US the organisers usually get hosting fees from the casinos as the players are required to stay at the on-site hotels and are buying food and drink there.

Don’t the PDC insist on this for the Vegas event and if you don’t stay at the on-site hotel they charge a large additional entrance fee as they aren’t getting a kickback on your hotel room and refreshment spend.

This is correct and I believe some BDO tournaments historically have done this. I don't like these sort of arrangements to be honest; especially in a place like Las Vegas as there are 10,000s of hotel rooms within walking distance of Mandalay Bay.

As for WSOD - $10k buy in, but only about 15% of the field win prize money and it usually takes about a week to get to that point. $10m winners cheque though...

Why all the worry over TV coverage?
Folk really should be more worried about the event even taking place in the first place.

Complete rubbish. Potter will get Jim D, Chubbs, Anita Harris and Canon and Ball and make a week to remember if it gets shifted.

This getting ridicolous now - I dont care about bells and whistles - At the end of the day its about putting food on the table - But the BDO shold be on TV - I dont get on the net much - Dont watch stuff on computers - We should be ringing up sky to tell them put it on - Not counting ticket sales or laughing at the board - Im a BDO darts fan - So are you lot - You all watch it - Get out of your own way - And lets get behind our sport -

The problem they have this year compared to last is it's on at a weekend.

That’s the problem for all sports channels too much at weekend and not enough to fill a 24/7 channel midweek.
Is why sports like tennis and cricket plus to a lesser degree golf are so popular for sports TV they will fill hours of that time period which would otherwise be repeats.

It’s why Sky dropped the Speedway Grand Prix aa even with 5 channels at the time it rated below 5 others live sports event in its Saturday time slot which was fixed by Polish TV where it gets the largest audience.

Hearn and Matchroom are familiar with this as they moved the Mosconi Cup exbo pool event to midweek from weekends when Sky threatened to drop it.

If BDO are serious with even getting interest from the likes of Premier Sports and Freesports they need to play the final rounds Tuesday to Thursday.

This of course only applies to sports channels as the more mainstream ones probably get a better audience from their weekday shows so wouldn’t drop for darts. Is why ITV4 say no to some sports as in the main their millionth rerun of Minder gets a bigger audience. That’s what Dave found. A rerun of Too Gear at virtually no cost to them (as once they have rights it’s unlimited repeats for as long as they hold them) is vastly more profitable than hosting, filming and broadcasting the BDO.

Whilst the problem of cluttered weekend schedules is indeed a problem, Premier Sports and Freesports aren't exactly scrambling round looking for something to show midweek evenings.
They've made a pretty heavy investment in ice hockey, both the NHL and also stuff like the Swedish League and KHL. The beauty of ice hockey to the broadcaster is they're able to show live games most evenings of the week for about 9 months a year (and delayed broadcasts pretty much as and when they feel like it).
I've no idea how much it costs them for these rights but they must be pretty serious about it. Apparently they renewed their NHL contract for another 5 years not that long ago, and paid a nice premium to make sure any NHL game they show live can't be viewed in this country on any official NHL internet stream, thus giving them full exclusivity.
Having spent that cash, I really don't see their top executives turning round and saying "you know what? I reckon we've made a mistake here and people would much rather watch Wesley Harms v Scott Baker instead"

Whilst your argument of holding events midweek if you want it broadcasting definitely has merit in general terms, I don't see Premier Sports / Freesports being interested any time in the near future.

I would wager Uncle Des inherited the mess of the broadcasters bailing out, but he was on the board before he took over as Chairman anyway.....
Both the current chairman and finance director where board members in the run up to this disaster. Jacklin is so far out of his depth it is unbelievable, he is a builder FFS. And to think that Paul James and Tommy Thompson encouraged people to vote for him tells you everything you need to know about their lack of judgement.
Maybe that was their plan all along.....
cos they knew Des was hopeless, and he might kill the bdo and make the edo more important ? ;-)
Or perhaps Des has promised them some sort of BDO/EDO comp to bring some cash in for them...provided they voted for him. ..Can't see that overseas sports company that Des mentioned as a sponsor ever coming true ...So far he's made 2 rulings that everyone wanted anyway and created a 'new' bdo website which is the same as the last one apart from the home page
