Tournament Averages - these are match averages weighted by number of legs, so will probably be slightly higher than the official averages. This year first, followed by 2018 - 2014:

Prelim Round: 82.40 (81.43; 83.59; 83.75; 78.54; 78.44)
Last 32: 86.36 (86.78; 88.17; 86.06; 87.88; 85.15)

No different to the usual really. Been ok so far this Lakeside, but the lower end of those who qualified via the world rankings has in general been poor. There is a reward for effort over ability that is becoming ever more obvious at the last 32 level.

For example, Dean Reynolds over the last year has recorded the following averages:

Bruges Open Final: 80.81
World Trophy L32: 71.28
Finder Masters RR1: 81.63
Finder Masters RR2: 74.40
Lakeside L32: 76.59

Now, I'm sure he's produced better than that when no-one is recording the averages (floor matches), but when it comes to stage matches that is fairly pitiful, and it showed in his throwing in what was a strangely watchable game on Monday - all over the place. If he'd have faced almost anyone but Daniel Day (also in shocking form) he would have got well beaten.

Top 12/16 in the BDO is fine, but below that is ever more luck of the draw and on the day. The less said about Robson the better!

That said, I think all that's been lacking is a few more nailbiters in the early rounds, and am looking forward to Friday afternoon for my annual visit - maybe for the last time at Lakeside!

phil davies wrote: Wed Jan 09, 2019 12:54 am The BDO ranking system is never going to give you the best players at Lakeside though as it massively favours those that do the full tour or which their can’t be more than about 50 or 60 surely. Than those who are better players but don’t travel or are unfourtunate enough to live outside of Western Europe.

The women’s qualifying is even more of a joke in terms of getting best players at the tournement.
I think the problem is that the best do not need to do the full tour - Duzza, Waites, Harms, even Mitchell don't play that many events. The problem is that you don't need to be anywhere near their standard to be in the top 26 because a few QF and L16 in Cat A+ - Cat C events will probably be enough, and will be easier because the best players stay away more often. There is not enough money to entice players from outside Western Europe to do enough of the tour to make it tough for the likes of Reynolds, Hamilton, O'Shea, and others.

Of those that have really put the effort in, Williams and Unterbuchner stand out as the best.

Womens rankings are a joke! But it needs more prize money to make a difference really.

I would abolish the Prelims but give a chance to players from around the world the chance to qualify. Justin Thompson did a fine job qualifying in the Top 28 which the competitions he has had.

The last 16 will feature players from England, Wales, Holland, N.Ireland, Germany, Canada & Poland which isn’t bad going in terms of a world competition

As for the Ladies. I would like to see the top 8 qualify as seeds. 4 players from overseas & 4 Qualifiers.

I have an incriminating picture of a moderator of this forum sat at a table at Farnborough Travelodge, fast asleep, from 3 minutes past midnight.

I may post it.

To Phil Davies and Addicks Fan...

Why are the women’s rankings a joke (forget about prize money - we would all agree is a joke) but in terms of getting the best players at Lakeside?? I can’t think of anyone who hasn’t qualified other than Rhian Griffiths, Beau Greaves and Danielle Ashton who would add to the event??

Maybe you could add a few regional tables into the ladies event but given most of the decent ladies are European anyway, would it really help?

Least it would mean that Suzuki woman wouldnt have to run the gauntlet of the Bridlington last chance saloon every time.

I will give him a chance to post first. Namely, I want immunity from my signature being tampered with if it makes a reference to a forum member wishing cancer on a darts administrator.
