Unless I was really smashed and dreamed it up
According to Darts Database the 2002 edition was 15,000 Euros to the winner, 32,500 Euros prize fund in total. Still as much as the Lakeside now, although only paid to QF.

I think 2005/6 it was €30k winner and €15k runner up when Ana was runner up to Francis

Amazing really - 2004 is the year Ana was runner-up. She beat Trina with an 89 average in the Quarter Final. According to Darts Database it wasn't held after 2005 - is that right?

I think we see a downward-Gulliver dip, and then an improvement.
There are signs of improved depth.
I think this year was exceptionally low because of Ashton's last 16 loss, combined with the crazy Prins v Suzuki game.

And here are the top 20 women for Lakeside average across all matches played.
Helped by recent boards, but note how many of them are currently playing ...

Irina Armstrong20102015772.1365.9179.80
Karen Lawman20062012472.0567.3575.60
And a little perspective on Gulliver's dominant period:
PlayerFromToCountAverageLowHigh
Trina Gulliver200120113281.3671.5895.97
I suppose I should express an opinion: as somebody else suggested, they need better depth of prizes rather than a larger top prize. To support the game they need overall support for players, rather than just one headline number.

And has 100s of entries plus sponsors that pay for that prize money.

The standard of play does not pay the bills.

The least they could possibly get........and then cut it in half.

Darts should never be gender specific.

Let's scrap the junior events as well. It's the same board and scoring for everybody.

Are juniors a different species?
Why are there separate junior events when it's a closed sport where there's no physical reason for separation?

So because we separate the juniors from the adults we have to separate the men from the ladies?

Why should there not be gender-specific tournaments, but there should be age-specific tournaments?

The women's prize money is OK as it stands given the standard they're at, if I was going to bump it up it would be 15k, or 20k absolute max with slight increases for the early rounds as well.

The problem is, what's the prize money like for the standard tour events? If a woman is winning £500 (for example) by being champion of a national open or Category A event, boosting the Women's Worlds is pointless as it won't address the problem of depth in the game if nobody can make a living from the circuit as a whole.

Looks like Des is serious on upping the prize money:

Love his comment about Eurosport - the lengths this man will go to ;-)

I reckon he must have some sponsors on board to be saying that
