I assume when he agreed to do the radio thing, he genuinely thought everything would be sorted by then (I'm still of the opinion this was supposed to be on in Preston, but he was kept in the dark about how bad the Guild Hall's problems were - the irony).

In fact, he was probably planning his triumphant announcement for that night. Then, when the wheels fell off, his choice was kick the can down the road, or cancel his big moment on local radio.
