YUANJUN LIU will return to compete for China in the BetVictor World Cup of Darts following the withdrawal of Qingyu Zhan.

Youngster Zhan had been set to make his World Cup debut after winning through the qualifying event in China alongside Xiaochen Zong.

However, the 21-year-old has withdrawn due to a passport issue, and will be replaced by Chinese number three Liu, who is now set to make his third World Cup appearance.

The 37-year-old from Guangxi previously competed in the 2016 and 2017 World Cups, qualified for the World Championship last year - losing to Brendan Dolan at Alexandra Palace - and has played twice in the Shanghai Darts Masters.

China begin their challenge at the World Cup of Darts when they face the USA in Friday's opening first round tie at the Barclaycard Arena in Hamburg.

The BetVictor World Cup of Darts will be held from June 6-9 at the Barclaycard Arena in Hamburg, Germany.

Broadcast live on Sky Sports, the tournament will see 32 countries represented by two players each in the unique event which features both doubles and singles matches.

MAGNUS CARIS is hoping to end his 32-year professional career on a high at the 2019 BetVictor World Cup of Darts in Hamburg this weekend.

Having flown the flag of Swedish darts for the bulk of his career, Caris recently announced his intention to retire after the World Cup, where he will represent his country for one last time alongside Dennis Nilsson.

Sweden will face Brazil on Day One of the tournament on Thursday live on Sky Sports, and Caris is hoping that match won't be his last appearance in blue and yellow colours.

"It's always an honour to represent your country," Caris told the Weekly Dartscast.

"I'll be playing alongside Dennis, who is a good friend of mine, so I'm sure it will be an awesome time in Hamburg.

"We will do our best and hopefully we will be able to win our first match. We play a lot of doubles games in Scandinavia so hopefully that will give us an advantage.

"We're going to give it everything and as long as we can be healthy and have a good life after this then I will be very happy."

The 50-year-old began his career playing in Swedish events before playing in BDO events from 1987, going on to reach the semi-finals of Lakeside in 1994.

Caris made his Alexandra Palace debut in 2010, before winning his PDC Tour Card in 2011 which he held until 2016, while also starring in every World Cup until 2018.

"I think 40 years of darts is enough! I'm 50 now so I think I can go on with something else in my life," Caris added.

"It was a great honour to play against people like Eric Bristow in my early career, I used to look up to players like him on TV.

"In 2010 my wife said 'Magnus, you're too goo just to play in Sweden, you need to play on an international tour', so she sponsored me to play in PDC events.

"Playing at Ally Pally was very different to Lakeside, everything is so much more professional and so much bigger.

"It was great to play on that stage, I like the crowd and all the PDC officials who are so friendly and took care of a lost Swede!

"To play on the ProTour was fantastic playing against the best players in the world every week. Just being a part of the PDC was great and hitting the nine darter [on the ProTour in 2015] has to be my highlight."

The BetVictor World Cup of Darts will be held from June 6-9 at the Barclaycard Arena in Hamburg, Germany.

Broadcast live on Sky Sports, the tournament will see 32 countries represented by two players each in the unique event which features both doubles and singles matches.

THE 2019 BetVictor World Cup of Darts begins on Thursday, with a new-look Netherlands bidding to retain their title at the Barclaycard Arena in Hamburg.

The unique 32-nation Pairs tournament will be held from June 6-9 live on Sky Sports, through the PDC's international broadcast partners, and on PDCTV-HDfor International Subscribers.

The £350,000 event will see each country represented by two players in a a combination of Doubles and Singles matches in a battle for the title, which was won by the Netherlands for a fourth time last June.

Michael van Gerwen and Raymond van Barneveld's triumph in Frankfurt last year saw the Netherlands equal England's record of four World Cup crowns in the eight stagings of the competition.

This year's event will see Van Barneveld absent in the Dutch line-up for the first time, with World Champion Van Gerwen teaming up with world number 23 Jermaine Wattimena, the second-highest Dutch ranked player on the PDC Order of Merit.

The fourth seeds will face Spanish duo Cristo Reyes and Toni Alcinas in their first round assignment, with Van Gerwen feeling confident of retaining the title.

"With all respect to Raymond, I think Jermaine deserves his place," said Van Gerwen, who has won the tournament three times alongside Van Barneveld.

“I love to hold records and this would be a special one.

“It would be something special for the Netherlands to overtake England and I am really determined to do that.

“Also for myself it would take me level on titles with three great World Cup players and if I do that then I have the chance next year to break that record too.”

The first round will take place across Thursday and Friday, with the second round split across two sessions on Saturday June 2, with the quarter-finals on Sunday afternoon and the semi-finals and final on Sunday evening.

Round one will see English top seeds Rob Cross and Michael Smith pair up for the first time against highly-rated Filipino duo Lourence Ilagan and Noel Malicdem

For Cross, this will be the former World Champion's second taste of World Cup action having reached the quarter-finals alongside Dave Chisnall in 2018, while Smith is relishing the prospect of pulling on an England shirt for the first time.

"I can't wait to represent my country, it will be one of the proudest moments of my career," said Smith.

"Even if I were to fall down the rankings in later years and this turns out to be the only chance I get to play for England, I will always look back on it with pride.

"Everyone wants to represent their country in any sport, and last year I was doing everything I could to get into the team, it was one of my biggest aims.

"I think we've got a good chance of doing well, Rob had a great Premier League season, whereas I didn't play badly but my doubles let me down."

Number two seeds Scotland will once again be represented by Gary Anderson and Peter Wright, who will be looking to go one better than their runner-up placings in 2015 and 2018.

They will begin their bid for a first title against Denmark, while Welsh third seeds Gerwyn Price and Jonny Clayton get their campaign underway against Paul Lim and Harith Lim's Singapore.

Simon Whitlock and Kyle Anderson will fly the Australian flag for Australia for a fourth consecutive year, and 2012 runner-up Whitlock admits it would be one of the biggest disappointments of his career if he were never to win the title for his country.

“Every tournament is important but this one is really special to me,” said Whitlock has reached the semi-finals on three other occasions.

“The final defeat in 2012 really hurt me but I’ve still got the chance to win it. Paul (Nicholson) and I were a strong team and the title was there for us to win but we missed our chance.

“That fuelled my hunger to win the event. It would be huge for Australian darts. I have built up a good rapport with Kyle and I think we are ready as a team to go and play our best darts in what I think is a very open tournament that we have every chance of winning.”

2016 semi-finalists Northern Ireland will once again be represented by world number four Daryl Gurney and World Cup ever-present Brendan Dolan, who will face South Africa in their opening game.

Kim Huybrechts and Dimitri Van den Bergh will compete for Belgium for a second successive year, having made it to the semi-finals in 2018, and they will meet Hong Kong in round one.

Austrian duo Mensur Suljovic and Zoran Lerchbacher will be hoping to erase the memory of their first round exit last year when they take on Russia.

Japanese pair Seigo Asada and Haruki Muramatsu, who were quarter-finalists in 2018, will open this year’s event against Gibraltar, who are represented by ever-present Dyson Parody and debutant Antony Lopez.

China, who meet the USA in Friday’s opening tie, suffered a late team change when Yuanjun Liu stepped in to make his third World Cup appearance following the withdrawal of Qingyu Zhan due to a passport issue.

Following the first round on Thursday and Friday, the tournament’s second round will be split across two sessions on Saturday June 8, featuring a combination of Singles and Doubles tie.

The event the concludes on Sunday, with the quarter-finals in the afternoon session to be followed by the semi-finals and final in the evening session.

Tickets for the BetVictor World Cup of Darts are available through PDC Europe.

PAUL LIM spoke of his continued love for the sport ahead of his return to the BetVictor World Cup of Darts in Hamburg this weekend.

A legendary figure in the game, 65-year-old Lim will once again team up with Harith Lim for Singapore at the Barclaycard Arena.

The pair who famously defeated Scotland on the way to the quarter-finals of the 2017 event are eyeing yet another upset against Welsh duo Gerwyn Price and Jonny Clayton in Thursday's opening round.

"I always feel that the chance for a lower ranked country to beat a seed is in the opening round," Lim told The Darts Show Podcast.

"It is a tough format for players who don't play together too often, but in soft-tip darts we play doubles all the time.

"You get used to each other a lot more so maybe it gives us a little bit more of a chance in the first round.

"We have to start the game well, get into the flow and make them hit the panic button."

After almost 40 years in professional darts, Lim continues to play on the PDC Asian Tour, through which he qualified for the 2018/19 World Championship.

Lim also continues to play soft-tip darts in an ever-busy schedule, and the former World Matchplay quarter-finalist explained his love of the game is as strong as ever.

"I still get the same buzz from the game as I always have done," Lim continued.

"Sooner or later I know it's going to come to an end, that's life, but I still have a lot of heart in the game, I love darts so much and I still have that passion.

"I still get excited even now playing in tournaments, meeting new players and when I retire I will still be involved in the darts scene that's for sure.

"I think I've got a few more good years left and I hope I can make the most of them.

"Darts is buzzing everywhere and I'm so glad we have a PDC steel-tip circuit in Asia.

"The sport is being shown a lot more on TV over here now and everyone wants to break into the World Championship or the World Cup of Darts. I think it will definitely continue to grow."

Have to say, I am looking forward to this as well.

Looking at the draw, and despite Snakebite being out of form and Gary not having played recently, I fancy Scotland to finally win this competition.

Would love to see a Wales vs Scotland semi final, with the first meeting of Ando and Gezzy since the Grand Slam of darts.

Only bet for me tonight is Lithuania to beat New Zealand at Evens.

Those odds seem massively out of synch.
