The weekends action at the Esbjerg Sports Centre in Denmark saw Fallon Sherrock take both the Ladies Denmark Open and Masters singles titles, whilst Wesley Harms took top spot over the 2018 Champion Willem Mandigers in the Open and Belgium’s Brian Raman won his first BDO ranked title by taking the Masters.

In a field of c.350 players, travelling as far afield as Japan and Australia, Saturday’s Denmark Open saw reigning Men’s Champion Willem Mandigers reach the final once again to meet fellow Dutch player Wesley Harms. Mandigers had earlier wins over number one seed Jim Williams 4-3 in the last eight, after Williams missed crucial match winning doubles, followed by a 5-2 win over England’s Dave Parletti.

Harm’s beat England’s Aaron Turner in the quarter finals 4-0, after Turner had earlier knocked out 2018 Open runner up Wayne Warren. Harm’s then beat Lincolnshire county A player Simon Stainton 5-2 in the semi final before winning the tournament 6-3 over Mandigers, registering a 105.30 average in the process. The win should see Harms move into World Number Two position on the BDO rolling table.

The Ladies events saw 22 of the top 24 women in the table in attendance from across the world, including World Champion Mikuru Suzuki and Australian International Tori Kewish making her 2019 debut in Europe. Sherrock, who despite making four finals this season, took her first win of 2019 by taking the Denmark Open 4-1 over reigning World Champion Mikuru Suzuki.

Sherrock’s semi-final win came against the four-time World Champion Lisa Ashton, edging out the ‘Lancashire Rose’ 4-2, whilst Suzuki beat Surrey’s Laura Turner in the second semi-final by the same 4-2 scoreline.

2018 Open Champion Aileen de Graaf was knocked out in the last eight stages by eventual Champion Sherrock, whilst Suzuki’s route to the final included wins over Paula Jacklin, Anastasia Dobromyslova and Deta Hedman.

The Master’s saw Willem Mandigers make his second final of the weekend to face Belgium’s Brian Raman, featuring in his first BDO ranked final. Raman, in a composed display, beat the number eight seed 6-3 to take his first BDO title and also claim a place in the BDO World Masters later in the year.

Raman fired in a 90.56 average in the semi-finals to beat Sweden’s Andreas Harrysson 5-3, whilst Mandigers battled through his semi-final to beat Wales’s Nick Kenny 5-4 with a 93.51 average.

Mandigers beat Wouter Vaes 4-1 in the last eight, whilst the unranked Raman had a 4-2 win over Denmark’s Simon Ban Pak 4-3, registering a 100.39 average. 2018 Denmark Master’s Champion Scott Mitchell was a last 32 casualty, losing 4-3 to 2019 WDT qualifier Poland’s Sebastian Steyer.

The Ladies Masters again went the way of Sherrock, who faced ‘From Russia with Love’ Anastasia Dobromyslova in the final. Sherrock won the final 5-3, after she once against had wins over Aileen de Graaf in the quarter-finals and a semi-final win over Lisa Ashton. Sherrock’s win over de Graaf saw her register the top ladies tournament average of 97.22.

Dobromyslova claimed her place in the final over Mikuru Suzuki, winning the semi 4-2 despite Suzuki registering a 95.80 average over Dobromyslova’s 86.98. Dobromyslova also beat England’s Deta Hedman 4-1 in the quarter-finals with a 91.19 average.

Sherrock’s wins this weekend should see her jump from joint fifth into second place on the BDO rolling ranking table.
