Northern Ireland Childrens Hospice...a wee plea for help

Post by Murphio » Thu Feb 24, 2011 2:24 pm

As many of you know my eldest son, Stephen, 9, has terminal cancer.
Image

At this minute he is being cared for by the Northern Ireland Children's Hospice: link
The work these people do is absolutely fantastic. Not only do they help with end of life care with children like my son but they also give respite to families with all forms of disabilities. Here Stephen has an individual carer who looks after him all day, from tending to his needs with medication, personal care, to running and getting him drinks, KFC and building lego. He has nurses on hand and doctors checking up on him on a regular basis. There is also a complimentary therapist, music therapist and basically everything he needs to make his last days as comfortable and happy as possible. There are 10 bedrooms each with Tv's and access to a beautiful garden. The whole place is not only wheelchair accessible but also bed accessible. Unfortunately at the minute they can only take care of 5 or 6 children due to lack of funding. (surprise surprise). The government pays for only 5 per cent of the funding so the rest must be generated from people's generosity.

At this minute there is very little myself and my wife can do to help this situation so putting our focus into raising some funds for the place which has been a godsend for us is a welcome way to feel like we are doing something, anything. I realise that TSOD is already doing amazing work for charity and therfore I hope no-one minds this being posted. But I have been inundated with kind wishes and offers of help, therefore I am giving everyone the opportunity to make a donation, however small, to help this wonderful charity on my son Stephen's behalf. We have already raised 500 quid just from a facebook link - but that is only the start. If we could raise even close to the 15k we raised for Marie Curie after my mum passed away with cancer we would be delighted.

His just giving page is here: http://www.justgiving.com/Stephenhewittmurphy

Many thanks, Jody, Nick (and of course Stephen).

Iv been thinking so much about Sean and your son lately m8. Sean recently had a spell in hospital again, ( i think hes planning a raid on the place meself)

Im going to talk to all involved, Welsh wayne, grubby, spaceman, Sean and of course Krispy. You are one of us, and we should do hat we can to support you and your son. I feel we can add in Stephens name and charity into the event, i hope the others feel the same.

Well said Al, it's at times like this we can put the forum banter to one side and all pull together.

I for one will be proud to make a donation to the fund.

Lee.

Me too - I'm as tight as they come with charity money except where I choose to give it too and this one needs no thinking about. Happy to do my little bit.

i'm flat on my arse at the moment but How about we do something along the lines of what Scott Gibling did a couple of years ago. We beg !! off the pro's anything we can then do an auction on here and see what we can raise.

i'd help with that if we think its got legs in it

I am lucky enough to have 9 children, 5 girls and 4 boys all of which I adore. I cannot begin to imagine what my life would be like without all of them in it. My heart and and prayers go out to you mate and I will of course do whatever I can to support the cause.
