Michael Smith - the next big thing?

Post by Deleted User »

No doubt that the lad has massive talent. 2 ProTour wins testify to this and now a 9-darter in Austria for a guy who is still a very young thrower.

I think he just needs a slight uplift in consistency and perhaps more importantly some work on the big match temperament to make a huge surge up the rankings and start to compete with the very biggest names on a regular basis.

I mention the temperament as I saw him blow a healthy lead against Peter Wright in Derby last year and some of his other results belie his clear ability.

Your thoughts?

I sat and watched his game tonight against Jamie. Jamie played some great darts and did nothing wrong but Michael showed a great deal of maturity even after hitting a fantasic 9 darter and from 3-0 down he went on to win. This young man oozes talent from every pore and If he us not a future World Champ I'll eat my darts case....

Expecting things on TV from you too Richie. Having marked your board final at Barnsley when you beat Mark Hylton 6-0!

There is a lot of talent bubbling JUST below the TV surface.

Mike Smith also hit a 9 darter last year on the youthtour.
This year we will see what Mike is capable of in front of tv camera's as he is qualified for almost every tv tourney this year.

Lots of young players get ridiculously over hyped.

My gut feel though is that Smith is the real deal and will win majors.

Michael Smith - the next big thing?

Someone else mentioned this elsewhere - Cullen and Monk are hyped to the hilt, yet Smith isn't. Can't for the life of me think why(!)

However it's obvious who the better player out of the three is.

Mike is a great talent and is a great lad with it. He has good support from his mentor/manger/sponsors etc who give him great support and are sure to help him get the best out of his game. Mike is also very hard working at his game, he is a practice nut!

When he acts like this, it's simply awful to watch. Mister 'I'm going to prove I'm the best darts player in the world' is more like having a go at proving he's the most mentally weak darts player in the world.

Started great, but collapsed like a flan in a cupboard after Duzza got in front. Colossal amounts of head-shaking and no bottle whatsoever.

I am still convinced he will be a superb player. Once he gets over the line in one I think many more will follow. 29 is still youngish in the darts world.
Thinking of one.
