History of the Dartboard

Post by THE ONE AND ONLY »

Well fellow darters I thought id put this up with regards some facts about the history of the dartboard

History of Dartboard ( Interesting Stuff )

The dartboard may have its origins in the cross-section of a tree. An old name for a dartboard is a 'butt', which might imply that the bottoms of wine barrels were the original dartboards; but the word in fact comes from the French word butte, meaning target.

There is speculation that the game originated among soldiers throwing short arrows at the bottom of the cask or at the bottom of trunks of trees. As the wood dried, cracks would develop, creating "sections". Soon, regional standards emerged and many woodworkers supplemented bar tabs by fabricating dart boards for the local pubs.

The standard numbering plan with a 20 on top was created in 1896 by a Lancashire carpenter called Brian Gamlin. However, a great many other configurations have been used throughout the years and in different geographical locations. Gamlin's layout was devised to penalise inaccuracy. Although this applies to most of the board, the left-hand side (near the 14 section) is preferred by beginners, for its concentration of larger numbers. Mathematically, removing the rotational symmetry by placing the "20" at the top, there are 19!, or 121,645,100,408,832,000 possible dartboards. Many different layouts would penalise a player more than the current setup; however, the current setup actually does the job rather efficiently. There have been several mathematical papers published that consider the "optimal" dartboard.

Carl, you are not seriously suggesting that Stevie was trying to pass this off as his own work.

With perfect grammar and structured well, even Stevie would not waste our time in suggesting such.

Cheers guys for the compliments above NOT :?

Only I thought id get a well done for such a post which I knew from years ago in the 70s

Meanwhile ssja and ginge wi the minge are simply jealous that I know more then them when it comes to Darts

not many know more than i .. Where did i get this from simply my own memory as same goes for my Poem

i made up . You like it also i know check below v

There's a darter fae Fife whom plays the game
and some player he is , Stevie's the name
No man sais he , shall stand in his way
there is no other when on his day

180's are easy, as dbles are so
When he stands at the oche, to put on a show
as his dart hits the bullseye , the other players pout
count 1, 2 and 3 game shot, over and out

Now come try and beat him , if you dare
but when Stevie's on fire, you better beware
Whose No1, on Fife's golden shore's
There's only one outcome, as Stevie's dart soars :P

Cheers mongoose , always knew you would appreciate such a post, and only a matter eh time until others come onto say well

done :) which a didnt expect Ginge the minge to say anything practical likes , as he wouldn't even if he seen me with his
own eyes hit a 9 dart game , in which I shall , but ill make sure its done in front of witnesses when I do
as i dont the 4 x 180s which made darts world

Anyhow as for when in practice , i was on for such after 2 back to back 180s a few weeks ago
and with 141 left I hit the treble 20 for a 7th on the trot, and with 81 left I deliberately missed the treble 19
as never wanted to do such alone .

But as said I shall in front of witnesses one day ..as I shall have my mind focused into dart mode only
and then shall one day I feel do such.. when my arm is into the board , wherever I am at the time
that shall become im pretty sure about such with arm into the throwing action, and mind locked into dart only mode .
