1997 World Matchplay

Post by thorntree »

Hi,

Somebody has contacted me to say that one of my 1997 World Matchplay results is wrong. Apparently Drew O Neil beat John Ferrell 8-5 in the last 32, not John Part 8-4. O Neill then lost to Phil Taylor 8-4 in the last 16. Does anyone know for sure whether it was Part or Ferrell that Drew O Neill beat in the last 32?

According to my contact O Neill beat John Part 6-4 in the qualifying and John Ferrell beat Paul Cook 6-1 at the same stage.

Thanks,
Chris

dartsdatabase got it down as Drew O Neill 8 V 4 John Part

and then he was beat in last 32 Kevin Spiolek 8 V 4 Drew O Neill

wiki has the same except they have Drew O Neill 8 V 5 John Part

reading this back i presume you actually run dartsdatabase ?

Doesn't Spaceman have all the copies of Darts World?

He just needs to dig out the 1997 ones...

Yes that's right. The trouble is I think world library and wikipedia originally got their results from me. I originally got most of the older PDC major results, prize money and averages from someone who used to run the PDPA website back in 2007 when I originally set the site up.

The person who's contacted me has sent me 3 copies of hand written score sheets which show the Ferrell Cook game was 6-1, Part O Neill was 6-4 to O Neill and O Neill Ferrell was 8-5. The trouble is the scoresheets he's emailed me look like Ferrell and Part have been tipexed out and writen over at some point. Does John Ferrell still post on here sometimes? I'm pretty sure he'd remember if he qualified or not!

Have you tried asking John Part on twitter pal? He's pretty active on there and a very reasonable Guy.

By the way your website deserves a lot of credit. A wonderful resource.

Slurp.

There was a documentary i think in 2014 for the matchplay , 20 years of the matchplay its about 45 mins long... maybe a bit of waste of time but could be worth watching incase they mention something :S

Thanks everyone. My contact said he spoke to John Part, but he couldn't remember one way or the other. I've been sent the darts world pages by Andy Scott now and it was definitely John Ferrell. They have the score as 8-6 rather than 8-5 though.
