1991 was to become one of those rare years in which Phil Taylor was not to claim a World title, the defending champion went out in the quarter finals to Dennis Priestley in a deciding set.
The Menace was to go on and lift his own first World title by beating former champions Bob Anderson and Eric Bristow in the semi and final respectively.
1991 also saw the debut of future multiple winner Raymond van Barneveld although on this occasion he was to go out in the first round.
