1992 BDO World Darts Championship

Post by The Cat »

The penultimate unified championship will long be remembered for its classic final which was contested by the top two seeds - Phil Taylor and Mike Gregory although both were to survive very close encounters on the way.
In the titanic struggle that was the final Gregory missed darts to become World Champion leaving Taylor the opportunity to take the match into a sudden death leg which he took full advantage of to claim his 2nd World title.

Phil Taylor won the Embassy World Professional Championship with a dramatic sudden death leg victory over Mike Gregory, and pocketed a cool £28,000 and enough ranking points to remain number One in the world.

The nine day tournament was the best attended in its 15 year history and the prize money of £119,500 was a record for the Championships.

No fewer than six former Embassy Champions were in the first round 32 and it was Jocky Wilson who was the first seed to fall, losing three sets to one against Merseyside’s Kevin Kenny.

Top average of the first round went to Phil Taylor with 31.21 [93.63] in his win over Sweden’s Magnus Caris. In fact none of Taylor’s five tournament matches that year dipped below 30.00 [90.00].

Into the second round then and it was Welshman Martin Phillips who provided the first shock stopping the seeded Bristow in his tracks with a 3-2 win. And it was another seed, Bob Anderson, who fell next following a five set sudden death decider with London’s Graham Miller.
Despite producing a credible 31.48 [94.44] average, Australian Keith Sullivan, seeded seven, went out to recently crowned Winmau World Master Rod Harrington. Sullivan who had taken out Peter Evison in the first round at least had the achievement of hitting a 170 out shot, the tournament’s highest finish this year.
Dennis Priestly then came a cropper against Alan Warriner losing by the odd set in five. All this despite recording a higher average, 31.33 [93.99] than his Lancashire rival.

The quarter final opened with Phil Taylor recording the tournaments highest average of 32.83 [98.49] in his four sets to zip demolition of the hapless Martin Phillips.
John Lowe’s tie against Graham Miller was a closer affair. But with the match finely poised at three sets each it was Lowe who turned on the after burners taking the deciding set in 16, 14 and 14 darts.
Mike Gregory then produced a remarkable comeback against Rod Harrington. Trailing three sets to one, Gregory took the last three sets in fine style to book his place in the semi-final.
In the last quarter final it was one-way traffic as Kevin Kenny triumphed over Alan Warriner by four sets to nil. There was no doubting that it was Warriner’s finishing that let him down.

The semi-finals saw Taylor quickly take a four sets to one lead over main rival John Lowe. But ‘Ole Stoneface’ unbelievably fought back to level at four sets apiece. Taylor looked drained but despite two 180’s from Lowe the last set eluded him and it was Taylor who fell over the finishing line.

Throwing at machine gun pace, the talented Kevin Kenny took a three sets to nil lead in his semi-final with Mike Gregory. But incredibly the Somerset battler wrestled his way back into the match and took the next five sets and establish a final meeting with Taylor.

The final has been perceived by many as the greatest darts match ever witnessed on TV. The script had been written. The lead ebbed and flowed. And at five sets each and five legs each the game was about to reach it’s tense, nail biting conclusion. The rest, as they say, is history.

Footnote: In the 31 matches in 1992 the 32 players threw an overall average of 28.84 per dart [86.52]. The previous year this figure was recorded as 28.88 [86.64]. There were a total of 2790 scores of a ton or more, 49 more than the previous year, and 150 180’s, three down on the WC in 91.
There were a total of 605 legs over 143 sets, using a total of 19,175 darts.
