Following the breakway that created the WDC they decided to hold their own World Championships and we have had 2 World Champions ever since. The event was held at the Circus Tavern, sponsored by Skol and included most of the players who had formed the WDC - Phil Taylor, Dennis Priestley, Rod Harrington, Alan Warriner, Peter Evison, Richie Gardner, Jocky Wilson, Eric Bristow, Keith Deller, John Lowe, Bob Anderson, Cliff Lazarenko, Kevin Spiolek, Jamie Harvey. Mike Gregory and Chris Johns had already returned to the BDO and were replaced by Graeme Stoddart and Kevin Burrows plus players from the United States and Ireland to complete the 24 man field.
Unfortunately for me trying to format this the first round was a round robin with each group producing a quarter finalist where the tournament became a straight knockout.
Dennis Priestley became the first ever WDC World Champion earning the second of his World titles in a comfortable 6 sets to 1 victory over Phil Taylor.
