Friday night is a qualifier for the WSOD. Players score points at each Friday event in an attempt to qualify for a WSOD place.
A record Friday field of 84 played the ALH Blue Cattle Dog Harrows World Series of Darts Qualifier 1. With a spot in the PDC limelight on offer through the whole series there was plenty of competitive matches Raymond Smith came out on top eventually, having defeated Tim Pusey 6-4 in the final.
Earlier in the night at the round of 32 stage Tahuna Irwin continued his good form in the Prodarts series with a 6-4 win over Mike Bonser. Loz Ryder showed that he still has it by comfortably getting past Dave Chrenock six nil. It was the same scoreline for Mick Lacey, who has recently returned from NZ and is playing the DPA circuit full time this year, over Jake Howie. The Shire’s Dave Marland defeated John Riley 6-2 whilst Perth’s Tim Pusey defeated local Kevin Luland 6-2. Brendan Porter defeated Brisbane Pro Darts Series representative Lewis Kirk 6 - 5 as another player from that event, Raymond Smith defeated Dennis Sario 6-0. Raymond O’Donnell continued to make waves at the oche as he defeated Alan Hunter 6-0. Youngster Tremaine Gallagher defeated Dave Hanel 6-4 whilst top four players from last season, GG Mathers, Rhys Mathewson and Lucas Cameron, all won through (over Graeme Lowe 6 – 5, Matthew Leahy 6 – 2 and Mark Colbongan 6 – 5 respectively.) Justin Thompson, back from his efforts at Lakeside, defeated Ryan Lynch 6-2, whilst Annan McDevitt closed that quarter of the draw with a 6-3 win over Steve Powell. Another highlight match of this round saw James Bailey, back from trying his hand at Q school in England, beat Mark Taafe 6 – 4. Scott Johnson defeated Paul Hill 6-3 in the other match for this round.
In the round of 16 two of the four players who had won 6-0 lost out, as both Loz Ryder and Mick Lacey were tumbled out, by Tahuna Irwin and Scott Johnson respectively. The closest match of the round saw Dave Marland get edged out by young WA superstar Tim Pusey 6-5. There were more comprehensive wins for Raymond Smith and Justin Thompson (both 6-1 over Brendan Porter and Annan McDevitt respectively.) James Bailey won 6-2 over Raymond O’Donnell in one of the big match ups of the round. Tremaine Gallagher continued his momentum with a ferociously fought win over Rhys Mathewson 6-4. The big clash of the round saw GG Mathers take out Lucas Cameron 6-3.
The quarters demonstrated the quality of the field with a field of exciting youth and experienced players left. Tim Pusey represented the young brigade by defeating fellow youngster Tremaine Gallagher 6-0 whilst Scott Johnson slowed the walk of the youngsters through the tournament by defeating Tahuna Irwin 6-4. Justin Thompson defeated GG Mathers 6-4 and Raymond Smith beat James Bailey 6-3 in two big head to heads. Pusey then got revenge for the youngsters as he laid Scott Johnson low 6-2 in the first semi final. In the second semi final Raymond Smith defeated another Australian team mate (as he had in the previous round) this time in Justin Thompson, 6 – 3.
The final was therefore set between Raymond Smith and Tim Pusey.
A 140 start from Smith was not matched by his opponent as Smith hit another 100 on his second visit. He then improved on it on his next visit with 118. With 142 needed Smith threw 60 to leave 82 which he collected on his next visit.
Having held throw Smith opened up with a maximum in the next leg and it was he who first chased a check out, of 115. He only got 43 and his opponent chased 65 which he collected in two darts.
A poorer opening visit from Smith was punished by Pusey with a 140 start in leg three but it was Smith who had first go at a check out. Requiring 78, Smith got the leg with last dart in hand.
A 60 opening from Pusey was then punished by Smith in the next leg with a century opening visit. Neither player could make the most of their next visit but a 134 from Pusey then put him in the box seat although his next visit of 28 threw the leg wide open once more. Pusey had 108 for a check out but missed the double for the leg. Smith then missed a double for a check out of his own but Pusey gave him a shot at ten, which he took, after the WA player left five chasing 20. Smith was now up a break and leading 3-1.
With a break in his pocket Smith opened up with 98 only to be out thrown by Pusey with 140. A consistent 100 at his next visit was bettered by a 139 from his opponent. 140 from Smith kept the pressure on but Pusey matched it exactly on his next visit. Requiring 82 Pusey only scored 62. With 98 needed Smith scored 74. This time requiring twenty Pusey did it with his second dart to immediately grab the break back. 3-2
A 41 start was corrected with a 140 on Pusey’s next visit. His opponent continued to be more consistent on his visits. A maximum put Pusey well ahead and requiring 114 on his next visit he left 14 which he was able to get with his last dart in hand. 3-3
The next leg needed Smith to stop the momentum of his opponent and he got to a check out first, requiring 160. He left 60 but was unable to get it on his next visit. His opponent needed the same and did it with his second dart to go a break up at 4-3.
Trying to tie things up Pusey opened with a poor 40 but Smith could not make the most of it, scoring 85 of his own. A visit of 26 second time around was again not punished by his opponent. A 60 visit from Pusey was followed up by 100 from his opponent. Pusey could not convert 116 but was well enough in front to chase the 56 next visit, which he did with two darts. 4-4
The match was back on throw and Smith opened with 97 and then 100. Another 140 helped Smith take a good lead. Smith collected 24 for the leg. 5-4
On throw Pusey required 89 for the next leg but only collected 39. Smith then required 100 for the leg himself and secured it for a 6-4 win.
Smith was ecstatic with the win “It is great to secure the first event of the season. Tim is a quality opponent and challenged me through the middle but I was pleased to be able to turn the match around back in my favour. It came as a great relief to throw that final 100.”

A field of 92 players took the first step towards the PDC World Championships as the second event of the DPA Pro Tour got underway at the Blue Cattle Dog in St Marys on Saturday. With the launch of new teams such as Team ACC Demolishers, Team Devil and Team Danger over the weekend there was plenty of excitement as they went head to head against established teams in Team Rebel and Team Maximum and the multitude of independent players on the circuit. At the end of the day it came down to two Queenslanders, independent James Bailey and Team Rebel’s Steve Macarthur. In the end it was James Bailey who came out victorious on a day that demonstrated the fact that darts in Australia is on the rise in terms of both exposure and depth of talent.
With 16 boards going it was hard to get out of the group stage with only the top two progressing. Tim Pusey (runners up in the previous night’s final) and Ryan Lynch progressed early in the afternoon. Justin Thompson and Dave Charnock qualified from their group whilst Loz Ryder and Kerry Allen progressed through an extremely difficult group. Lucas Cameron missed out after a three way play off moved Ryder and Allen through.
Mark Colbangan and GG Mathers both progressed first from their groups with Marshall Allen and Ian Dargan runners up respectively. Local Jerry Weyman topped his group with Ash Britt runners up whilst another local, Kevin Luland progressed as runners up after a play off in his group with Steve Powell finishing ahead of him. Bill Aitken, on his return to the series after a long layoff, and Adrian McDevitt got through their very difficult section, seeing off the likes of young Kiwi starlet Tahuna Irwin.
Pat Molloy won through in first place as the calibre of that group in a three way play off which included Manny Kato, Mick Lacey and Rhys Mathewson, which saw the latter progress. Big names Raymond Smith and Tic Bridge progressed through their group as expected whilst Ray O’Donnell continued his good form by winning his strong group. A three way play off in that group saw Beau McCann see off Kalani Hillman and Alex Evans. John Riley went through his group undefeated with Andrew Eagers second, having only lost to Riley. Craig Prizeman, Paul Lease, and Steve Macarthur had a three way play off for the top two positions in their group with Macarthur (1st) and Prizeman (2nd) progressing. Scott Johnson (top) and John Watkins progressed through. In the last groups NSW’s Mike Bonser and Team Danger’s Dave Williams and James Bailey and Tyler Fitch made it through to the draw for the round of 32.
The round of 32 saw Pat Molloy beat Kerry Allen 4-1 whilst John Riley clean swept Ash Britt. Loz Ryder set up with a round of 16 clash with Riley by defeating Ash Britt 4-0. Mark Colbangen defeated John Watkins by the same score line whilst James Bailey beat Craig Prizeman in five legs. Rhys Mathewson defeated Justin Thompson in a battle of the titans 4-2. GG Mathers also made it through by defeating Kevin Luland whilst Mike Bonser made it through against Marshall Allen (4 – 3.)
In the later matches of that round Tim Pusey won against Ryan Lynch (4 – 3), Steve Powell defeated Adrian McDevitt (4 – 2), Bill Aitken whitewashed Andrew Eagers, and Ray O’Donnell defeated Eagers team mate Dave Williams 4 – 1. Tyler Fitch took out Jerry Weyman 4-3 whilst Steve Macarthur eliminated Beau McCann 4-0. Scott Johnson continued his good form of the previous night with a tight 4-3 victory and in the final match of the round Raymond Smith beat Ian Dargan 4-0.
The round of 16 saw victories recorded for John Riley (6-1 over Ryder), Mike Bonser (6-3 over Mathewson), Tim Pusey (6-0 over Johnson), GG Mathers (6-4 over Colbangen), Steve Macarthur (6-5 over Smith), Tyler Fitch (6-2 over O’Donnell), James Bailey (6-3 over Molloy), and Steve Powell (6-5 over Aitken) Many of these would be considered upsets on paper but demonstrated the depth of quality player that will be a part of the tour this year.
The quarter finals looked like they would be tight affairs however two proved to be not so. Steve Macarthur defeated Tyler Fitch in his quarter comfortably with his opponent only able to win one leg of seven. Steve Powell overcame Tim Pusey by the same score line. In a closer match John Riley defeated Mike Bonser 6-4, the same score line as James Bailey defeated last year’s Pro Tour winner GG Mathers to set the four semi-finalists in places.
The Bailey v Riley semi-final looked one sided with a 6-0 score line but Riley had some chances throughout the match. With Bailey 3-0 up the Tasmanian missed tops for the leg that could have got him back into the match. With Riley on 73 in the fifth leg he could not convert over two visits and his opponent pounced once more. Even in the final leg Riley was on 68 and just missed a double for a check out only to watch as Bailey converted 60 with his next two darts to secure his position in the final.
The other semi-final saw Steve Macarthur move comfortably into a 5-1 lead. Some of the legs had been close but Macarthur had prevailed in all but one as he lined up to complete the match 6-1. However Steve Powell had other ideas and took out the next leg comfortably. With Macca on 56 Powell was able to check out 76 on his next visit and he threw his opponent under even more pressure when Macarthur missed tops for the match and Powell converted 68. He still needed to break against Macarthur’s throw though and the Team Rebel man moved to 82 to put pressure on his opponent. However Powell was good enough to get the 86 required on his next visit and lock the match up.
The final leg looked Powell’s throughout the leg as he moved to a comfortable lead. However he struggled to convert the 48 required and with both players throwing nervous darts at the end it was finally Macarthur who held his nerve enough to secure the leg and the match and move into the final against James Bailey.
So after a day filled with youngsters trying to upset the established stars it was two veterans that squared off in the second Pro Tour final of the year. James Bailey won the all-important bull for the first throw and he started strongly with a 140 followed up by 81. A 26 start from Macca was followed up with a more respectable 100 and the two moved closer together after visits of 81 and 140 respectively. Bailey got to the first conversion of the night but looking for 119 he had to leave 60. With Macarthur on 183 (he then moved to 142) Bailey missed two fat numbers and had to leave tops. Chasing the 142 Macarthur converted for a brilliant early steal.
In the second leg Macca had to consolidate but could only open with 60 but was left relatively unpunished by his opponent. The next time he was not so lucky as Bailey collected 120. With Bailey on 119 once more Macarthur moved from 185 to 145. Bailey could only collect 42 as Macarthur was unsuccessful at checking out the big number this time. Chasing 77 Bailey hit 19, 18 and 20 and once again Macca pounced in a leg he had been behind in.
Bailey started with consistent 100s in the third leg A 140 from Macarthur improved his lot a little to 260 but Bailey was on 178. Another 140 left Macca able to pounce and thus Bailey tried to check out 138, scoring 92. Macarthur once more hit the big check out (120) to take a second break and a three nil lead.

With 16 boards going it was hard to get out of the group stage with only the top two progressing. Tim Pusey (runners up in the previous night’s final) and Ryan Lynch progressed early in the afternoon. Justin Thompson and Dave Charnock qualified from their group whilst Loz Ryder and Kerry Allen progressed through an extremely difficult group. Lucas Cameron missed out after a three way play off moved Ryder and Allen through.
Mark Colbangan and GG Mathers both progressed first from their groups with Marshall Allen and Ian Dargan runners up respectively. Local Jerry Weyman topped his group with Ash Britt runners up whilst another local, Kevin Luland progressed as runners up after a play off in his group with Steve Powell finishing ahead of him. Bill Aitken, on his return to the series after a long layoff, and Adrian McDevitt got through their very difficult section, seeing off the likes of young Kiwi starlet Tahuna Irwin.
Pat Molloy won through in first place as the calibre of that group in a three way play off which included Manny Kato, Mick Lacey and Rhys Mathewson, which saw the latter progress. Big names Raymond Smith and Tic Bridge progressed through their group as expected whilst Ray O’Donnell continued his good form by winning his strong group. A three way play off in that group saw Beau McCann see off Kalani Hillman and Alex Evans. John Riley went through his group undefeated with Andrew Eagers second, having only lost to Riley. Craig Prizeman, Paul Lease, and Steve Macarthur had a three way play off for the top two positions in their group with Macarthur (1st) and Prizeman (2nd) progressing. Scott Johnson (top) and John Watkins progressed through. In the last groups NSW’s Mike Bonser and Team Danger’s Dave Williams and James Bailey and Tyler Fitch made it through to the draw for the round of 32.
The round of 32 saw Pat Molloy beat Kerry Allen 4-1 whilst John Riley clean swept Ash Britt. Loz Ryder set up with a round of 16 clash with Riley by defeating Ash Britt 4-0. Mark Colbangen defeated John Watkins by the same score line whilst James Bailey beat Craig Prizeman in five legs. Rhys Mathewson defeated Justin Thompson in a battle of the titans 4-2. GG Mathers also made it through by defeating Kevin Luland whilst Mike Bonser made it through against Marshall Allen (4 – 3.)
In the later matches of that round Tim Pusey won against Ryan Lynch (4 – 3), Steve Powell defeated Adrian McDevitt (4 – 2), Bill Aitken whitewashed Andrew Eagers, and Ray O’Donnell defeated Eagers team mate Dave Williams 4 – 1. Tyler Fitch took out Jerry Weyman 4-3 whilst Steve Macarthur eliminated Beau McCann 4-0. Scott Johnson continued his good form of the previous night with a tight 4-3 victory and in the final match of the round Raymond Smith beat Ian Dargan 4-0.
The round of 16 saw victories recorded for John Riley (6-1 over Ryder), Mike Bonser (6-3 over Mathewson), Tim Pusey (6-0 over Johnson), GG Mathers (6-4 over Colbangen), Steve Macarthur (6-5 over Smith), Tyler Fitch (6-2 over O’Donnell), James Bailey (6-3 over Molloy), and Steve Powell (6-5 over Aitken) Many of these would be considered upsets on paper but demonstrated the depth of quality player that will be a part of the tour this year.
The quarter finals looked like they would be tight affairs however two proved to be not so. Steve Macarthur defeated Tyler Fitch in his quarter comfortably with his opponent only able to win one leg of seven. Steve Powell overcame Tim Pusey by the same score line. In a closer match John Riley defeated Mike Bonser 6-4, the same score line as James Bailey defeated last year’s Pro Tour winner GG Mathers to set the four semi-finalists in places.
The Bailey v Riley semi-final looked one sided with a 6-0 score line but Riley had some chances throughout the match. With Bailey 3-0 up the Tasmanian missed tops for the leg that could have got him back into the match. With Riley on 73 in the fifth leg he could not convert over two visits and his opponent pounced once more. Even in the final leg Riley was on 68 and just missed a double for a check out only to watch as Bailey converted 60 with his next two darts to secure his position in the final.
The other semi-final saw Steve Macarthur move comfortably into a 5-1 lead. Some of the legs had been close but Macarthur had prevailed in all but one as he lined up to complete the match 6-1. However Steve Powell had other ideas and took out the next leg comfortably. With Macca on 56 Powell was able to check out 76 on his next visit and he threw his opponent under even more pressure when Macarthur missed tops for the match and Powell converted 68. He still needed to break against Macarthur’s throw though and the Team Rebel man moved to 82 to put pressure on his opponent. However Powell was good enough to get the 86 required on his next visit and lock the match up.
The final leg looked Powell’s throughout the leg as he moved to a comfortable lead. However he struggled to convert the 48 required and with both players throwing nervous darts at the end it was finally Macarthur who held his nerve enough to secure the leg and the match and move into the final against James Bailey.
So after a day filled with youngsters trying to upset the established stars it was two veterans that squared off in the second Pro Tour final of the year. James Bailey won the all-important bull for the first throw and he started strongly with a 140 followed up by 81. A 26 start from Macca was followed up with a more respectable 100 and the two moved closer together after visits of 81 and 140 respectively. Bailey got to the first conversion of the night but looking for 119 he had to leave 60. With Macarthur on 183 (he then moved to 142) Bailey missed two fat numbers and had to leave tops. Chasing the 142 Macarthur converted for a brilliant early steal.

With Bailey on 119 once more Macarthur moved from 185 to 145. Bailey could only collect 42 as Macarthur was unsuccessful at checking out the big number this time. Chasing 77 Bailey hit 19, 18 and 20 and once again Macca pounced in a leg he had been behind in.

Would be nice to see Raymond Smith at WSOD events, he impressed at Winmau and Lakeside the other year and has a great walk on!!!

COREY CADBY was amongst the winners on the second weekend of the DartPlayers Australia's 2018 Pro Tour series in Victoria.
UK Open finalist Cadby is back in Australia at present having celebrated his marriage to partner Breana on March 18.
The former World Youth Champion took the opportunity to compete in the DPA weekend in Seaford, taking victory in Friday's Event Four and also reaching Saturday's semi-finals and Sunday's quarter-finals.
Cadby overcame Gordon Mathers in Friday's final, also also overcame former World Series of Darts qualifier Clinton Bridge and his father Fred during the event.
Raymond Smith was the winner of Saturday's Event Five, seeing off Cadby 6-5 in the semi-finals before overcoming Steve Macarthur 6-4 in the decider.
Mal Cuming was Sunday's Event Six winner as he defeated James Bailey in a deciding leg in the final.
The weekend was a successful one for former World Championship qualifier Macarthur, who reached one final, one semi-final and a quarter-final.
The next DPA Harrows Pro Tour weekend will be held from April 13-15 at the Warilla Bowls & Recreation Club in NSW. For more information, please visit www.dartplayersaustralia.com.
