Setting up a darts comp

Post by deadlydiego »

Hi all

Wonder if anyone can give me some tips on setting up a darts competition. The format for the competition is the bit that I am most comfortable at organising, the bit that I would be struggling with is how to go about sponsorship of the events, prize money split and how many places to pay out to.

Any help or tips that you can pass on would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Depends on is it a guaranteed prize pot or money in money out pot,

most comps ive been to pay out to the quarter finals and obviously the split depends on the number of entrants if money in money out and this cant be decided until the day of the comp unless you do a pre registered comp where you pay up front but past experience of these you tend to get more entrants by letting them just turn up on the day and register,
to do a guaranteed prize pot you will need sponsors cant help with that im afraid as i just attend the odd comp and dont organise,

some comps ive been to also just guarantee the winners prize or the winner/runner up prize with the remaining prize pot being dependent on entries, or advertise the payout say on a number of entries obviously stating if the number of entrants isnt reached the prize pot will differ, although a guaranteed prize pot will get you the most entrants if decent for obvious reasons.

Winner 40%
Runner up 20%
Semi final 10 % x2
Qtr's 5% x4

Maybe set a minimun for winner saying paid to qtr's if numbers reach 64. 63 or under pay to semis split

Winner 50%
Runner up 25%
Semis 12.5% x2
Thinking of one.

Also you probably do all ready make sure you understand the draw fully and how many byes you need depending on entries, see many a minor comp fecked up by getting the initial draw wrong.

I like the payout but I do think if possible giving at least money back for last 16 is more attractive to the "rank and file".

Yeah I would poss change it to that if 64 or more. If you do it with 63 or less some players would only need to win 1 game to cut even because of byes.

Host venue could pay it I suppose so kitty stays as said above.

With regards sponsorship the biggest asset you have are the dart players who turn up and drink and eat. Finding a venue who will appreciate this and be willing to pay to have the event are key. You might have to help them set up some boards if it's a venue who have not held a big event.
Be creative in finding a venue and putting some work in with them with regards set up and your half way there.

Then it's on getting 'board sponsors' to top up - just small local firms willing to give a small £20+.

I'm in my 5th year hosting a comp in my local village in Cornwall.
I do a round robin comp. This suits all the players as the lower standard players like to play more than one game.

I also have excellent support from the Plymouth players.

The 1st year we had 24 - Money in/Money Out
This year I have 80 - 16 groups of 5 players £1000 prize fund
My payout is;

£400 Winner
£180 RU
£75 Semis
£30 1/4
£10 each for the group winners and a £40 high check out

I'm also hoping to get some sponsorship to add to the kitty
