A staple of the BDO calendar will not be taking place this year as the tournament formerly known as the Finder Masters has been scrapped for 2019.
The event has been running in one guise or another since 1995 when it was known as the Dutch Grand Masters, but has also been dubbed the Doeland Grand Masters and Zuiderduin Masters, among other names.
A who’s-who of BDO heroes have won the competition, including Raymond van Barneveld, Martin Adams, Gary Anderson, Scott Waites and, most recently, Glen Durrant.
However, the event will not be played this year, and could be gone for good, after tournament organisers failed to find a main sponsor after Finder’s sponsorship deal came to an end.
While it is not a BDO issue that has seen the end of the tournament in the Netherlands, it is a blow for the organisation to see a popular event fall by the wayside. Now a PDC player, current BDO world champion Durrant tweeted: ‘Sad news #ProudChampion’
It is a tough time for the BDO with major tournaments still waiting for announcements on venues and main sponsors.
The World Trophy, World Masters and World Championships are all yet to have venues confirmed with the World Trophy now less than two months away.
The sad news about the Finder Masters will only further the confusion and doubt that players and fans have been suffering since the Lakeside World Championships in January.
