Well played Michael Smith, held it together, and a great last two legs to finish the green goblin off. A near classic, but MvG couldn't keep his level up.

Sky still trying to convince people that we've watched 'the best eva final'. Was it fuck. It wasn't even close.

Kudos to Smith. Classy finish to come back and win that set. And quickly shaking MVGs hand then running to his family. Great darts.

Prior to the GSOD, you'd give Smith no realistic chance of winning this. After?

He is the only player in the field (except Wright at 100%) who has anything like the scoring required to put pressure on the Goblin. And Goblin is feeling the pressure - he was always at his most tetchy at the worlds, even in his pomp - you can see it in that video.

This is the one he cares about more then the rest combined. He's been under absolutely no pressure at all so far. Let's not pretend he's invulnerable. His arse fell out left, right and centre for about three years.

If Smith can put him under early with a barrage of big scores, he has every chance.
This cunt knows.

Didn't need any bottle in the end. MVG was the one who lost it.
Fantastic to have a new World Champion

Well done Michael. :DDDD:

Not a bad result for whom a number of posters on the forum have articulated that he is a choker and would never win a Major.

For those of us who have always seen Michael as potentially one of the best players who will ever play darts, it is a start to his legacy.

Enjoyable night of darts on the TV.

And an enjoyable night on the forum.

Great stuff. Well done Smith. Will those who have relentlessly classed him as a bottle job say "well done Smith, I was wrong"?

2003, 2007, 2015: three finals definitely better than this 'best evA' game tonight.

I could make a case for at least five others.

He won a TV premier event a few months back, mate. Was it not on the wireless?

Agree with the both of you. Put any player under pressure, whether it be MVG at the highest level, some of our posters who are decent dart players or the likes of me who normally perform at a 45 average(uplifted from 42 in 2021) and their performance will be affected.

That MVG was the best player and Smith had a reputation for not crossing the line made this one of the top finals.
A new World Champion which we haven't seen in 5 years also. I would class this in the top 5.

It was always a possibility that MvG would collapse under pressure. He's had a much better year this year but let's be honest - his main threats at the top end of the game have dropped off and he's taken advantage of that, as much as anything else. Bomber was onto something, albeit he made too much of it. The 'prime' MVG hasn't been seen in years and he's bottled loads of matched.

He waltzed through this field on a combination of bravado and his 95% game being more than good enough most of the time. When he was faced with someone who didn't simply collapse in the face of a few 12-darters, he slowly but surely fell apart. Again. I was fairly surprised to see Smith widely written off before this game. He always had a chance, if he got off to a good start.

Smith won the GSOD not eight weeks ago. MvG was a favourite, but Smith was no worse than 3-1 most places. And MvG fell to bits at the end. He was averaging about 90 in the last four sets.

It started brilliantly, but tailed off markedly around halfway.

1996, 2004, 2013, 2015...all clearly better than this final IMO. I could make a genuine case for a few more on top.

It wasn't even close to being the best PDC final. It is ridiculous that SKY persisted with the claim that it was.

They must be desperate for this year's tournament to be remembered for something. It tells you all you need to know about the rest of it!
