2018 WSOD

Post by The Jolly Man »

THE 2018 PDC World Series of Darts will commence on Friday May 25 with the second staging of the German Darts Masters, with the VELTINS Arena in Gelsenkirchen to be transformed for the unique event.

The VELTINS Arena will be transformed into a "Darts Music Arena" for the one-day event, which will see 16 players - including the sport's top stars and Germany's leading aces - competing.

In addition to the knockout darts action on the oche, the German Darts Masters will also feature gigs by a series of well-known musicians on stage in between rounds.

The confirmation of the 2018 German Darts Masters comes following the huge success of October's inaugural event in Dusseldorf, which was won by German fans' favourite Peter Wright as he defeated Phil Taylor in the final.

Tickets for May's event will go on sale at the end of January, with fans able to pre-register now at www.eventim.de.

"The spectators in the VELTINS Arena will experience a unique sports and music event," said Zeljko Karajica, CEO of 7Sports, the sports unit of the ProSiebenSat.1 group, and managing director of the organising company, MMP Event GmbH.

"Darts is becoming more and more popular in Germany, which is why we are offering this fascinating and thrilling sport a platform that it has never had before."

PDC Chairman Barry Hearn said: "The sport has undergone an incredible growth in Germany and it was a natural step to take the World Series of Darts there in 2017.

"To now be able to expand the German Darts Masters in 2018 in this way is fantastic for what should be an unforgettable day of darts."

The competing players for the 2017 German Darts Masters will be confirmed in due course, while an open qualifying event is set to be staged to determine some of the eight German representatives.

I didn’t actually realise that the arena for the German Masters is the same stadium that England were knocked out of the 2006 World Cup.

The PDC are looking at a 20,000 capacity. :o

They were fine about it I just explained I would have no use for anything in it.

Dont think any include it now as they agreed there was too much confusion with people paying it out here and they getting charged for it when they check out.

Dont know of any hotels that let you not pay it though.

BRISBANE and Vienna are to host the PDC's World Series of Darts for the first time in 2018 following confirmation of the year's seven events, while Rob Cross, Jamie Lewis and Dimitri Van den Bergh will also step onto the global stage.

The ongoing global expansion of the World Series of Darts will see six worldwide events followed by the end-of-season Finals, which will move to Austria in November.

The year's events will begin with the second staging of the German Darts Masters, with a one-day spectacular being held on Friday May 25 at the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen.

The stars of the sport will then return to Las Vegas, with the North American Championship to be followed by the second U.S. Darts Masters, which will be held at Mandalay Bay from July 5-7.

July's double-header will then see the third Shanghai Darts Masters held on July 13-14 at the Pullman Hotel Shanghai South, before the action heads Down Under for an August treble-header.

The Auckland Darts Masters takes place from August 3-5 at the Trusts Arena, with the sport's top names returning to New Zealand for the fourth staging of the popular event.

The action then moves to Australia, with the second Melbourne Darts Masters taking place from August 10-12 at the Hisense Arena before the inaugural Brisbane Darts Masters, from August 17-19 at the BCEC, sees the World Series visit Queensland for the first time.

The season-ending World Series of Darts Finals will then be held from November 2-4 at the Multiversum Schwechat in Vienna, as Austria hosts the 24-player event.

The world's current top four players - Michael van Gerwen, Peter Wright, World Champion Rob Cross and Gary Anderson - will compete in each of the six international events.

They will be joined in the German Darts Masters by Austrian star Mensur Suljovic – the reigning Champions League of Darts winner - five-time World Champion Raymond van Barneveld, reigning World Youth Champion Dimitri Van den Bergh and World Championship semi-finalist Jamie Lewis.

The top two German players from the PDC Order of Merit at April 30 will also qualify alongside six players from the German Superleague.

World Grand Prix champion Daryl Gurney and Premier League star Gerwyn Price will compete in the U.S. Darts Masters - where the Northern Irish ace was runner-up in 2017 - and Shanghai Darts Masters in July, with the final two PDC players to be confirmed in due course.

The U.S. Darts Masters will also feature the eight players from the USA or Canada who qualify to compete in the 2018 North American Championship - with four winners from qualifiers to be held on July 3-4 joined by four players from a Qualifiers Order of Merit.

The Shanghai Darts Masters will see the eight PDC stars up against eight regional competitors, with the top three players from the PDC Asian Tour, following Event Six, joined by five Chinese qualifiers.

August's three events will see Van Gerwen, Wright, Cross and Anderson joined by Australian trio Simon Whitlock, Kyle Anderson - the reigning Auckland Darts Masters champion – and recent UK Open finalist Corey Cadby plus one other player.

A series of qualifying events will be held during July for players to win spots in the three events, to be held in Invercargill from July 2-8 and in Warilla from July 22-25.

The Auckland Darts Masters will feature the top two players from the DPNZ World Series Qualifiers Merit Table, plus one player from the DPA World Series Qualifiers Merit Table, plus four players from the Auckland Darts Masters, with one place to be confirmed.

The events in Melbourne and Brisbane will both feature the top two players from the DPA World Series Qualifiers Merit Table, one player from the DPNZ World Series Qualifiers Merit Table and four qualifiers, with one place to be confirmed.

The World Series of Darts Finals will then see the top eight players from the final World Series of Darts Order of Merit joined by 16 invited players and qualifiers to compete in Vienna.

Legal as long as all methods of payments carry the same "surcharge", Just Eat have started charging 50p for cash pickups so they can carry on charging 50p for card transactions.

THE field of PDC representatives on the 2018 World Series of Darts has been completed following invitations for Michael Smith, James Wade and Raymond van Barneveld.

The World Series of Darts' global tour will see tournaments held in Germany, Las Vegas, Shanghai, Auckland, Melbourne and Brisbane ahead of the end-of-season Finals in Vienna.

Whilst the field for the German Darts Masters has already been finalised, and includes new German Darts Open champion Max Hopp, two places remained in the other five international events.

Former World Youth Champion Smith, who currently sits in second place on the Unibet Premier League table and has won two ranking titles this year, has been invited to compete in all five events.

He will be joined in the U.S. Darts Masters and Shanghai Darts Masters by James Wade, a two-time World Series of Darts finalist and multiple winner on the big stage.

Five-time World Champion Van Barneveld, meanwhile, will compete in the Auckland Darts Masters, Melbourne Darts Masters and Brisbane Darts Masters as the popular Dutch legend returns to the World Series, where he will also compete in Germany next week.

"This year's World Series of Darts is shaping up to be a thrilling set of tournaments and this announcement completes the PDC players who will compete in each event," said PDC Chairman Barry Hearn.

"Michael Smith is enjoying his breakthrough year on the big stage after knocking on the door in recent times, and after having a taste of the World Series in 2017 has now got a great opportunity to light up the global stage.

"James and Raymond are two players who are known globally for their achievements and have vast experience around the world.

"Despite not being selected for the Premier League this year, James' attitude has been excellent and he has been a leading performer on the circuit.

"Raymond's profile makes him a massive draw in New Zealand and Australia, where he has previously reached World Series finals, and as the sport's elder statesman in playing terms will be a big drawcard for fans Down Under."

The world's top four players - Michael van Gerwen, Peter Wright, Rob Cross and Gary Anderson - will compete in all World Series of Darts events this year.

Daryl Gurney and Gerwyn Price will compete in Las Vegas and Shanghai, with each respective event featuring a series of eight regional qualifiers.

Australians Simon Whitlock, Kyle Anderson and Corey Cadby will compete in Auckland, Melbourne and Brisbane, with seven Oceanic Representatives also set to qualify for the treble-header.

The U.S. Darts Masters will be held on July 6-7 at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, Las Vegas, and will be preceded on July 5 by the North American Championship. For tickets, visit www.pdc.tv/vegas.

TOP SEED Michael van Gerwen will play leading home star Max Hopp in the first round of the 2018 German Darts Masters on Friday May 25 in Schalke.

The opening event of the World Series of Darts will take place in front of a record-breaking 20,000 crowd at the VELTINS Arena which will be transformed into a "Darts Music Arena" for the one-day spectacle.

Germany's leading aces will compete in the tournament, led by German Darts Open champion Hopp, who will be hoping for first career win against Dutch ace Van Gerwen.

Reigning champion Peter Wright will face Dragutin Horvat in a rematch of their first round clash in last year’s tournament, which saw the world number two edge a 6-5 thriller.

Berlin-based youngster Schindler, who made his breakthrough last year, will take on World Series debutant Dimitri Van den Bergh, the World Youth Champion who steps onto the global stage.

World Champion Rob Cross will also be making his first World Series appearance as he faces Stefan Stoyke in the opening round.

Number four seed Gary Anderson will take on Gabriel Clemens, who has made a big impact on the ProTour in 2018, while World Championship semi-finalist Jamie Lewis will also take his World Series bow against Nico Kurz.

Austria's Mensur Suljovic will play Robert Marijanovic, and five-time World Champion Raymond van Barneveld will take on Manfred Bilderl.

In addition to the knockout darts action on the oche, the German Darts Masters will also feature gigs by a series of well-known musicians on stage in between rounds.
