How long till the BDO goes bust?

Postby London Eye » Mon Aug 06, 2018 7:58 am

With Potter refusing to stump up the prizefund with no major broadcaster in place, and losses already from the WDT and upcoming World Masters, no TV deals in places and no sponsors. How long before Des Jacklin bankrupts the BDO?

It's quite simple, if the finances are that bad, bearing in mind they willbe a lot worse than the last accounts because of running the last masters and wdt, and if there is no TV or sponsor for lakeside then Des just needs to announce in the next month that the Worlds will be a reduced event this year with little prize money and then rebuild for next year.
And whilst on the subject, seeing as I have not chased him for a while, I noticed that Ian was getting badly shown up on Fanatics last night by Howard and Mason. It was because Ian suggested that thebdo could not go bankrupt if they ran a full lakeside because they have 500k in bank, sadly ignoring both the true cost of the Worlds and that since the last accounts they have run the Masters and WDT at a huge loss.
Even better news is that he said he no longer reads our forum so I can say what I like lol.

Anyone suggesting they go ahead as normal even with that money in the bank is a moron.

Besides I will wait to see if the event has no sponsor or TV first, it is still 5 months away.

Steve’s shocker continues.

It’ll go bust tomorrow, just like it has every time someone has started this thread.

I have a sneaky feeling there is already stuff in he pipeline and this was Des’s plan from the start.

Heard mumbling in Preston about why the WDT had to go ahead for the sake of future events.

If they don’t have plans in place, It’s pretty much safe to say that you will have 40+ players suing them on the “Water Tight” contracts the players signed last year stating that there will be an Event with the equivalent of prize money as the 2018 WC.

I agree, I still think they will get it on mainstream TV, at Lakeside it still a viable product.
Won't help about Sportotal though, that could have ramifications in the industry and may keep TV companies away.

If the BDO would bust, and that's still a big if, what do people think the immediate consequences would be? Obviously the few majors they organise would stop but what about the rest? Would the bigger and smaller opens carrying ranking points be seriously effected? Would county darts stop altogether or would the counties arrange something amongst themselves? Would super leagues and pub leagues be affected?

Before I get accused of shit stirring, I must say I'm not very familiar with the English setup, so don't know how far down the influence of the BDO goes in terms of organising stuff. County, superleague? Or are the super leagues mainly self governing?

Let's be honest here if the BDO closed tomorrow no-one outside of the players would know until January when it wasn't on TV. The counties would continue probably taken up by the EDO/WDO/SDO etc, superleague would continue as that is run by the counties. The players would filter to the challenge or pro tours nd it may even facilitate more independently run opens, maybe even in association with the PDC/WDF and open to all.

The WDF would become the governing body properly and who knows maybe a new world championship would emerge run by them.

In short, it would nt make that much difference in the long run.

Will be interesting to see what the proposed "new venues" for some of the BDO tournaments will be, a lot of buzz around the Lincs players about them...

Good, would be a shame if the big opens or leagues would suffer.

I couldn't see the WDF creating a new worlds and would suspect the only country that could run it , the Netherlands, would see its national org pairing up with the PDC before that happened.

If the BDO did go bust not sure where that leaves the WDF as the PDC have a foothold in almost every country the WDF has a major hold. It will take loads of local meetings to bring things together.

You do wonder what the PDC have in store for announcements for 2019. Will a women's tour be fast tracked to further drive nails into the BDO coffin. A European Challenge Tour? With some of the revelations of the weekend they won't be sat back.

I don't know whether Barry Hearn still cares about driving further nails into the BDO coffin. I mean it's not like they are still a viable threat commercially. Think he will only initiate new tours if he thinks them commercially viable, not because he thinks they might hurt the BDO.

Chucking the members' money at broadcasting and prizes for the current events will last around 18 months and it will all be gone.
