That may be the case but what choice is there - play for a few thousand or don't bother?

Not really true, they started playing to qualify a year in advance and then they thought they were playing for a different prize fund.
They were told way too late what the actual fund was and of course they weren't going to walk away. Better than nothing.

How. There was no money to pay the full fund.

They should have slashed the prize fund years back. The ones who should be compensating the final crop are players are Durrant and Bunting taking all those £100ks out of the BDO which weren’t affordable to the BDOs long term survival.
