Looks like the cost of staging what would be a Gold ranked event is starting to bite. Isle of Man Open will not carry WDF points, wonder if any of the other big opens will follow suit:

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE PROMOTER

"Welcome to the 2023 Isle of Man International Festival of Darts and for the hundreds of supporters who return to the island year after year there are a few notable changes we must highlight for you.

The IOM Open which where possible has always carried ranking points be that of the BDO or WDF variety will now not be ranked. It will be as the name suggests a genuine ‘Open’ event in which anyone outside PDC card holders can now enter.

It wasn’t a decision we made lightly but following lengthy discussions both internally and with the IOM Government Tourism department during which all possibilities and options were explored it was decided we simply couldn’t justify or afford the cost of hosting a WDF Gold event as has been the case for the last two festivals, certainly not without asking the players to pay for it, and that was something we decided we simply couldn’t and wouldn’t do.

However, as the EDO support for the WDF remains steadfast and embracing the IOM Classic on the Thursday night will still carry ‘Silver Ranking' status so make sure you put that one in your diaries

On behalf of the EDO and IOM Government Tourism board can I thank you all for booking and we look forward to welcoming you all to the iconic Villa Marina Venue in March."

Why couldn't they make both of them silver?

I assume they didn't want to make only the Open Silver because more players would skip the Classic.

I wonder if this is at all related to their "Men's winner bonus" dodge from last year.

Shame about the ranking points not being there for the Open. Wil definitely get less entries because of this. Should still be a good event though.

I think they are making a point to get the WDF to reduce the Gold fee in future years. If tournament organisers aren't prepared to pay it, the WDF will lose a lot of dosh. 2,500 dollars is a lot to add on, and is ten times the silver fee, which is crazy. They need to restructure between the three grades, cos there is not a lot of money to spare at the moment.

Hi All,
Just to clarify the situation, during the WDF Annual meeting in Spain, several remits were sent in from England Scotland and Wales, concerning the structures and financial levies which were imposed on all the countries. We all had major issues right from the start, that these structures, and levies were having a detrimental effect on the abilities of the countries to make their events viable, as and such they needed to be reviewed, and a sense of the current market place for darts needed to be realised.
Whilst we remain 100% committed to the WDF, we found it impossible to continue with ranking all our events under their current conditions, this was pointed out by us during the meeting. Not just the rise in players levies from $2 per player per event to $5 per player per event, on top of that there was the Event Levy for Gold, Silver and Bronze. It was also pointed out that some countries were not expected to contribute to the same level as say the ones in UK and Europe, but received the same rewards, hardly a level playing field, which is another unfair issue we tried to resolve.

It would be wrong to assume that this is the only issue, as it wasn’t! there are rigid price structures of payments, and the levels at which they needed to be paid down to, all these had no relationships with entry levels, ie: the possible income the events could generate, to facilitate the running of the events, which we felt was more important.

As a business the IOM wanted to advertise a £5,000 first prize for the event, it is their event and their money so what is the problem? This is their commercial decision, in the hope of attracting more compeitors to the Island.

However instead of paying around £16,000 in the Open, we were told we had to adhere to their structured payments which meant if we paid £5,000 to the Men’s winner the total cost just to the Open Men’s and Ladies Prize money would exceed £28,000, where on earth does this money come from, it might look good on a paper exercise but not viable, and would put the event in jeopardy.

Sadly all these issues fell on Stoney ground, so as we looked to negotiating the 2023 Festival, we were facing even more financial problems than we already faced in 2022, never mind the current economic state all our countries are facing, which will have an effect on the events.

Fair play to the WDF executive although it was their remits, it was the members who voted them in, however many of them don’t run any events, yet decided that those who do (us) and have done for many years, now faced increased costs. In all honesty it wouldn’t have mattered to them if the player levy went up to $100, it would have no effect on them.

We would like to thank the IOM government for their continued support, 37 years now, there is over £33,000 prize money at this year’s event, equivalent to around €39,000 for players who support us from Europe. The event and the actual weekend is brilliant, meeting up socially once a year with like-minded friends, definitely the highlight of my year, 30 odd years I have attended.

We hope the majority of our usual players commit again to this year ( I have already booked at best Western as usual, and bought some new cards for crash on the boat) and bring along someone new for the experience, as they say support it or lose it.

Tommy, does this mean that there won't be any Gold ranked events in Britain this year, as all the national bodies raised the same concerns?

perhaps a factor could be nobody knows what they are playing for points wise, is it lakeside or the dutch hotel when will it be , folk cant be expected to traipse around without a finish line to aim at !

Isle of Man Festival of Darts 2023 - Effect of Venue Closure

Due to the closure of the Villa Marina by the Isle of Man Government we have re-planned the weekend in order that all events can still take place. Ferry crossings to the island have also been cancelled meaning that some players due to attend may not arrive on time to take part. Consequently, the seedings and draws previously published will have to be revised. This has been approved by the WDF.
