Anderson must have realised he is dropping down the rankings and so is desperately trying to save his spit among the top 32.

I think it's more that having fallen out of the top 16, he needs a high Pro Tour ranking to get into the TV tournaments.

Anderson is defending a lot of money, I think getting back into the top 16 is unrealistic at this point unless he has some really good runs

First he needs to be in the ranked TV tournaments to have a really good run. Since he's not in the top 16 of the PDC OOM he needs to be in the top 16 on the Pro Tour of players not in the top 16 of the OOM. to get into the Matchplay and Grand Prix. It's hard to be in the top 16 of the Pro Tour without playing European Tour. At the moment he's:
3.25k outside the Matchplay
0.5k in the Grand Prix

He's also not in the Grand Slam (which normally needs a TV final or European win to guarantee a spot) and obviously not in the European Championships.
(Also currently not in the Players Championship Finals).

He's a long way of the _actual_ top 16 of the Pro Tour, which gives a player European Tour seeding and boosts their chances of earning Pro Tour ranking money. But that's nigh on impossible without playing European Tour events.
